Location: RG7 4PR, between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.
Due to the classified nature of the work, remote working opportunities are limited. The successful candidate will primarily work on site at AWE Aldermaston.
Package: £37,860 - £56,000 (dependent on qualifications and experience)
Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. We consider flexible working requests—please specify your preference in your application.
Role Overview
AWE is recruiting an Applied Physicist or Engineer for the Future Systems Technologies Group / Non-Nuclear Components Group. This role involves hands-on physics experiments, designing experiments, and analyzing results to support hardware development and modeling programs, with some travel within the UK and to the US.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop understanding of electrical energy use in firing units for Electro Explosive Devices.
2. Understand explosive energy technology issues.
3. Manage technical work programs.
4. Plan and conduct explosive trials with diagnostics.
5. Maintain technical progression of the Electro-Explosives Team.
6. Assist in training firing officers and explosive workers.
7. Engage with relevant communities within AWE.
8. Coordinate with international partners and external stakeholders.
9. Participate in review and improvement activities to uphold best practices.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
* Undergraduate degree in a scientific or STEM discipline, or equivalent (HND plus vocational training or experience).
Preferred Skills & Experience
* Ability to produce and review technical reports.
* Teamwork and staff development skills.
* Strong communication skills across teams and stakeholders.
* Problem-solving capabilities.
* Innovation skills.
Desirable but Not Essential
* Experience with explosive materials, energetics, firing system design, or diagnostics.
* Experience leading projects.
* Knowledge of shock modeling and 3D CAD software (e.g., Siemens Unigraphics NX).
