The Matron role is based in one of our girls’ boarding houses. The position is offered on a full-time basis (part-time considered). The primary responsibility is to support the Houseparent with the welfare, happiness and well-being of the pupils in their care.


Overview

Role: Matron (working alongside the Houseparent to manage day-to-day running of the House, ensuring cleanliness, tidiness, comfort, health and safety). The role is supported by cleaning staff.


Responsibilities

* The Matron, with the Houseparent, is responsible for the day-to-day running of the House, including cleanliness, tidiness, comfort and health and safety.
* Support the Houseparent with the welfare, happiness and well-being of the pupils, supervising and caring for pupils with emphasis on physical, social and emotional well-being and presentation.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Medical and Domestic: be responsible for the general health and well-being of students in the House alongside the Houseparent; be the first point of contact for pupils who are unwell or require treatment; liaise with parents and staff as required.
* Maintain medical supplies and stock levels; attend appointments and escort pupils to hospital as required.
* Store, administer and record medication in accordance with the school's Medical Care Policy; keep medical cabinets and first aid kits stocked and ensure medications are not expired; check First Aid Boxes termly.
* Coordinate with Catering regarding students with specialist dietary needs; manage post/parcel collection; manage House supplies in liaison with Catering; maintain high standards of tidiness and respect; monitor and report defects to Maintenance via Parago; conduct H&S inspections as directed; manage keys for rooms and desks; ensure pupils are encouraged to attend lessons and activities.
* Prepare each room at the start of the school year; supervise unpacking of deliveries; oversee end-of-term shutdowns; ensure House signage and house handbook are up to date; ensure laundry signage and machine use is proper; ensure laundries are emptied at term end.
* Maintain online systems (e.g., Word, Outlook); monitor and report H&S issues; respond to emails and messages as required.


Pastoral

* Provide high-level pastoral care for pupils in partnership with the Houseparent; interact with Tutors, Medical Centre and Safeguarding Officer; establish strong relationships with pupils to monitor wellbeing.
* Maintain a visible presence during breaks and changeover times to ensure supervision; be aware of adolescent mental health issues and attend relevant training; record concerns on the CPOMS pastoral system; work with Houseparent to support all members of the House and foster a culture of mutual respect.
* Be a key contact for parents and colleagues; regularly meet with the Houseparent to discuss pupil welfare; monitor behaviour, attendance, and general welfare; ensure pupils are appropriately dressed and consider rewards and sanctions where appropriate.
* Support house events and activities; be prepared to manage the House in the absence of the Houseparent, including fire evacuation; uphold the school code of practice for health and safety and policies on bullying, substance misuse and child protection; attend staff INSET and house meetings, and take minutes as required.
* Hold and regularly update a First Aid qualification as prescribed; check and respond to emails and messages throughout the day.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Educated to A Level standard with GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above in Maths and English.
* First Aid qualification; child protection knowledge; good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
* Experience in a school or college in a similar role is highly desirable; understanding of independent schools.


Skills and Competencies

* Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people of all ages; competent at sewing; ability to keep accurate records.

* Commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people; warm, trustworthy and tactful; flexible approach to duties and hours; ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative; empathy with and understanding of teenagers; confidentiality; well organised with good time management; practical and able to stay calm in emergencies.
* Working hours: 40 hours per week full-time, term time only plus one week. We will also consider candidates for 2-3 days per week.
