Overview
The UK operations of Roxel are based at Summerfield, Kidderminster, where there is a vacancy for a Laboratory Scientist.
Roxel is an Anglo‑French company that designs, develops and manufactures solid propellant rocket motors for use in tactical missiles. It operates across several sites in the UK and France with an annual turnover of about £200M and nearly 1,000 staff.
There is a Laboratory Scientist vacancy based in the UK site at Summerfield, Kidderminster.
Role and responsibilities
Laboratory Scientists play an important role in manufacturing processes by testing a wide variety of explosive and non‑explosive samples to ensure they meet standards and specifications. The laboratory team operates across four laboratories, each specialising in different testing disciplines, with opportunities to develop competency in multiple areas.
The successful candidate will work as part of the laboratory team, carrying out the preparation and testing of a wide range of raw materials, intermediate production materials and final products. Some materials are explosive in nature.
There are a wide variety of testing techniques used, including:
* Chemical analyses using techniques such as HPLC, GC, FTIR, AAS, and traditional gravimetric and volumetric methods
* Physical and thermal testing such as tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA)
* Other techniques specific to the industry, with training provided as required
There are opportunities to work in several laboratories and to develop competency in a wide range of testing techniques, ensuring there is always something new to learn.
The successful candidate will help to ensure that equipment and facilities are maintained and will communicate test results to internal customers across the business. This role is ideally suited to a graduate or to someone with experience of working in a laboratory environment.

* Assist with writing test methods and procedures

* Assist with maintenance of equipment and facilities
Qualifications
Experience and background
* Degree in Chemistry or another science-based degree; candidates with significant experience working with energetic materials may also be considered
Essential Experience
* Practical experience of handling hazardous chemicals and materials
* Experience of working in a laboratory environment (university or industry); or experience of working at Roxel
Desirable Experience
* Experience in communicating information to others
* Experience in writing COSHH and risk assessments
* Experience of working in a high hazard environment
* Experience in analytical testing techniques
* Experience in physical testing techniques
