Band 7 Senior Paediatric Research Nurse
The closing date is 29 April 2026. We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly skilled Paediatric Research Nurse who can demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in research and leadership skills. The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Research Midwife to lead a collaborative team across the Paediatric, midwifery and gynaecology research team, delivering research in areas including DMD, SMA, respiratory, diabetes, infectious disease, allergy & immunology and vaccines trials. The post is based at Heartlands Hospital but works collaboratively at all sites across the trust. We have recently upgraded our clinical research facilities in the MIDRU building at Heartlands Hospital and this is an exciting opportunity to lead the growth of the portfolio of studies and further development of the team, working together with the clinical teams to embed research, increasing opportunities for our patients.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will work together with the Senior Research Midwife and have responsibility for the effective and efficient operational day-to-day management of the team, including budget control, governance, staff development and training. The post holder is professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards of professional practice and care. They will provide professional leadership within the paediatric, midwifery and gynaecology research team, providing direction and inspirational leadership to all members within the multi-disciplinary team.
The post holder will undertake and supervise research and teaching to set, monitor and continuously improve standards of care and patient experience. The post holder is accountable for safe, effective clinical practice, managing and developing team performance, managing a devolved budget ensuring efficient use of physical and human resources. They will work collaboratively with Lead Research Nurses and Senior Research Nurses across the trust to seek and provide support and deliver compassionate leadership.
Qualifications
* Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience working in clinical research
* Registered Paediatric Nurse on Level 1 NMC register
* Evidence of mentorship/leadership skills
* Completion of a relevant post registration specialist course or experience in research and development
* ICH GCP training
* Research training such as informed consent, safety reporting, audit & inspection
Experience
* Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development and ability to maintain professional registration
* Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a complex health care or acute NHS setting working as a deputy Manager Band 6, including supervision and education of junior staff or students
* Demonstrable current, recent experience of team leadership and management within the healthcare setting
* Demonstrable understanding of management responsibilities for pay and non-pay resources associated with the clinical service
* Experience of being a mentor
* Demonstration of a significant contribution to innovative practice or change management
* Experience in interviewing and selection of staff
* Experience in learning from incidents or complaints and supporting changes in practice
* Demonstrated ability, experience and passion in leadership, team building, managing resources, time management, clinical governance, audit and research, workforce planning and management, NHS policy and political awareness
* Evidence of effective multi-professional working
* Knowledge of research governance
Additional Criteria
* Ability to work flexible shift patterns, including day, night duty and unsocial hours according to service need
* Willingness to work core shift patterns for the area Monday to Friday with occasional out of hours or weekend working
* Undertake a range of shift patterns to cover 24/7 period when working as part of a peer group with occasions of out of hours or weekend working
