To assist in the provision of the Maternity service and the effective running of the Department under the close supervision of a registrant, usually a midwife, ensuring they contribute towards a quality patient experience.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist general bed making, cleaning beds and lockers, bedpans, trolleys and preparing for new admissions.
• Decontamination of equipment as required and ensuring infection control measures are adhered to.
• To undertake and be responsible for routine tasks under the supervision of the midwife e.g. locating and filing in notes, preparing documentation and equipment on the ward.
• Support and provide day to day care in assisting mothers and babies such as personal hygiene, care for babies, supporting hydration needs of women and babies including documenting hydration and micturition on fluid balance and feeding charts, catheter care.
• Establish and notify of any dietary requirement to the relevant qualified midwife and liaising with the catering team when required.
• Assisting in the movement of mothers and babies as and when required using appropriate equipment when and where necessary. Escorting mothers and babies to various Trust departments when required.
• Proactively respond to the needs of the mother and baby, within the scope of their role- recognising their limitations and presenting themselves in a credible and competent manner
• Provide and receive information in relation to mothers and babies and escalate as appropriate to qualified midwife or doctor
• To act as chaperone in accordance with Trust policies
• Order and manage general ward stock levels and adequate ensure stock rotation
• Maintain daily ward statistics including admissions, discharges and transfers of mothers and babies as required and entering on appropriate systems.
• To enter and extract information using Maternity Information Systems
• Answer the telephone and convey messages when required. Effective use of communication skills
• Assist with ward inductions of colleagues and the development of others as instructed.
• Report any repairs promptly to relevant department.
• Any other reasonable duties required by management.
