We have an exciting opportunity at Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for a Locum Specialty Doctor with a special interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology. This post has become available due to the retirement of the current post-holder. The position will be primarily based at the Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor.
This is a part-time role (8 PA's), and the candidate will work alongside other Consultant Ophthalmologists. The role involves active participation in the busy Paediatric Ophthalmology service at PCEU, including paediatric ophthalmology clinics, refractions, and casualty clinics. There is no regular commitment to theatre lists, but this can be considered based on the surgical experience of the candidate.
The service benefits from an experienced team of Orthoptists, Optometrists, and Nurses, who will provide full support. GMC registration with a license to practice is essential.
Main Duties of the Job

* Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, engaging in regular discussions with colleagues.
* Provide evidence-based care within a multidisciplinary setting.
* Maintain responsibility for patient care, including all associated administrative duties, with secretarial support.
* Manage paediatric outpatient clinics, squint surgeries, refractions, and ocular motility tests independently.
* Possess experience in general ophthalmology.
* Contribute to teaching, examinations, accreditation, and educational activities for undergraduates, postgraduates, and ongoing medical education.
* Participate in clinical audits and continuous medical education.
* Handle emergencies and unforeseen circumstances appropriately.

Job Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
1. Demonstrate competency in diagnosing, investigating, and managing paediatric ophthalmic patients in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings.
2. Assess vision in children of all developmental ages and manage refractive errors, squints, and amblyopia.
3. Order or refer for appropriate tests, including metabolic, genetic, and electro-diagnostic tests.
4. Diagnose and plan management for nystagmus in children.
5. Manage eye and vision problems related to brain damage and cerebral visual impairment.
6. Co-manage paediatric, glaucoma, corneal, retinal diseases, and uveitis with specialists.
7. Confidently examine and diagnose infants with absent red reflex and non-accidental trauma.
8. Recognize cases needing specialist referral.
9. Use advanced consultation skills to manage busy clinics effectively.
10. Assist in decision-making for patients with cognitive impairments, utilizing services like IMCA if needed.
11. Perform paediatric squint surgery independently (desirable but not essential).
