Overview
We are looking for an organised and committed Transport & Production Manager to join our team at Walkersteel, a leading UK steel stockholder. The role is primarily focused on managing our transport fleet and drivers, ensuring we remain compliant and efficient. Alongside this, you'll take responsibility for ensuring material is cut and ready for loading, so that vehicles can depart on time and in full.
The successful candidate must be a CPC-qualified Transport Manager and will act as the company's named holder on our Operator's Licence.
Key Responsibilities Transport Management
* Hold and maintain the CPC qualification and act as the company's named Transport Manager on the Operator's Licence.
* Ensure compliance with DVSA/VOSA requirements, including drivers' hours, tachograph records, vehicle inspections, and licence undertakings.
* Manage fleet maintenance schedules, defect reporting, and vehicle availability.
* Plan daily/weekly transport routes and loads, maximising efficiency and controlling costs.
* Oversee and support drivers, ensuring safety and high standards of customer service.
* Monitor transport KPIs such as delivery performance, fuel usage, and downtime.
Production Coordination
* Ensure material is cut, prepared, and ready for loading in line with transport schedules.
* Liaise with our Operations Manager to prioritise workloads based on delivery deadlines.
* Check accuracy of material before dispatch to minimise errors or delays.
* Work closely with warehouse staff to coordinate flow of stock from warehouse to vehicle.
Leadership & People
* Lead drivers and warehouse operatives, providing clear communication and direction.
* Carry out toolbox talks, performance discussions, and support training needs.
* Promote a culture of safety, compliance, and teamwork.
Skills & Experience Required
* Essential:
* Valid CPC qualification (Certificate of Professional Competence).
* Proven experience managing transport operations in the UK.
* Strong working knowledge of transport compliance and Operator Licence obligations.
* Good organisational and communication skills.
* Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
* Desirable:
* Experience in the steel, metals, or manufacturing industry.
* IOSH / NEBOSH or other H&S training.
