Job Role
Environmental Enforcement Officer Team Leader.
Hours
On Average 40 hours + overtime (0.5 hour unpaid lunch) varies between 7am and 9pm.
Pay Rate
£16.23 per hour.
What The Role Is
The Environmental Enforcement Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining public health, safety, and environmental standards by enforcing environmental laws and regulations. The officer will investigate environmental violations, issue warnings, fines, or citations, and educate the public about environmental responsibilities. They will work closely with local authorities, businesses, and residents to promote compliance and help reduce environmental crimes such as littering, fly‑tipping, and pollution.
Main Responsibilities
* Assist the Council in the investigation of complaints made by members of the public.
* Daily liaison with the Council.
* Provide statistical data to the Council and manage freedom of information requests.
* Lead from the front and issue Fixed Penalty Notices whilst in your front‑line role.
* Monitor conduct and performance of the team.
* Ensure the smooth running of the team.
* Provide theory and front‑line training to new team members.
* Provide on‑the‑ground support as and when required.
* Document processes across the enforcement teams.
* Keep up to date with legislations and relay this information to the team.
* Conduct officer appraisals.
* Compile initial prosecution files and liaise with the Local Authority legal team.
* Perform any other reasonable task under the instruction of the Operations Manager.
* Produce statistical reports on a daily, monthly and yearly basis.
About You
* Experience in a similar leadership role is essential.
* Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Anti‑Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 would be advantageous.
* The ability to communicate with offenders in demanding circumstances in a professional manner.
* Previous experience in a customer service role and handling difficult situations professionally.
* Enjoy working outdoors, on foot in all seasons carrying out foot patrols for prolonged periods.
* Professional approach, balanced sense of judgement, and ability to act with conscience and integrity.
* Ability to use your own initiative within a team environment.
* Own transport.
Environmental Law Enforcement
* Enforce environmental regulations and local by‑laws relating to littering, fly‑tipping, graffiti, waste management, noise pollution, and other environmental concerns.
* Patrol assigned areas to detect violations and ensure compliance with environmental laws.
* Investigate reports of environmental offenses from the public and respond promptly to complaints.
Issuing Fines And Notices
* Issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs) and citations to individuals or businesses for non‑compliance with environmental laws.
* Prepare and serve legal documents, including warning notices and fines, in accordance with local laws.
* Conduct follow‑up visits to ensure compliance with issued notices and take further action if necessary.
Investigation And Reporting
* Investigate environmental offenses such as illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles, and unlawful waste disposal by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing case files.
* Use surveillance equipment, including cameras, to monitor and collect evidence of environmental crimes.
* Report findings to senior management and collaborate with legal teams to pursue prosecutions when necessary.
Court Proceedings And Legal Support
* Prepare case files for prosecution, including collecting evidence, photographs, and witness statements.
* Attend court proceedings and present evidence as required to support legal action against environmental offenders.
