School development adviser (maternity cover)

York (North Yorkshire)
The Church of England
€45,000 a year
Posted: 2 March
Offer description

The Church of England plays a vital role in communities across England, and the Diocese of York is committed to renewing and living out our vision of Living Christ’s Story. Through our parishes, schools and households, we aim to nurture flourishing Christian communities and provide education rooted in excellence and Christian distinctiveness.

The York Diocesan Board of Education (YDBE) leads this work across 122 Church schools and academies, supporting them to deliver high‑quality education shaped by the Church of England’s Vision for Education. Working in partnership with local authorities, Multi Academy Trusts, Teaching School Hubs and national bodies, the YDBE promotes strong standards, effective governance and thriving Christian school communities.

We are seeking a School Development Adviser to join our Education Team on a maternity‑cover basis. This role is central to supporting school improvement, developing Christian leadership, and ensuring schools are well‑prepared for Ofsted and SIAMS inspections.

Key Responsibilities

* Advise and support schools in delivering the Church of England’s Vision for Education.
* Contribute to strategic leadership across the DBE and Diocesan education structures.
* Support school improvement through monitoring, development visits and partnership work with LAs, MATs and Teaching School Hubs.
* Assist schools with SIAMS preparation, self‑evaluation and action planning.
* Attend Ofsted and SIAMS inspections as required.
* Provide guidance on Christian leadership, governance and headteacher appointments.
* Represent the Diocese on relevant committees and working groups.

About You

You will bring experience in school leadership or school improvement, a commitment to the Christian foundation of Church schools, and the ability to work collaboratively and sensitively with a wide range of stakeholders. Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships are essential.

The role requires some travel across the Diocese and occasional out‑of‑hours commitments.

We are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion and welcome applications from disabled candidates and those from UKME heritage as these groups are under‑represented in our staff. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All employees are expected to share this commitment. You will be required to undertake safeguarding training, and this role will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

This role is based at the Diocesan Office in Clifton Moor, York. For any enquiries, please contact Kirsty McCullough at 01904 699500 or email kirsty.mccullough@yorkdiocese.org.

Only fully completed applications through Pathways will be accepted. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Closing date: Midnight on Tuesday, 17 March

Shortlisting: Thursday, 19 March

Interviews: Tuesday, 24 March 2026 in York
