Offer description

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist/Intensivist to support anaesthesia and critical care services across oncological specialties, including surgery, radiotherapy, and proton therapy for paediatric patients.

Overview

The role comprises a 10‑PA job plan with 7.5 PA for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 PA for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). Daytime sessions, on‑call cover for the 8‑bed Level 2/3 Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU), and additional proton‑therapy sessions form the core duties.

Responsibilities

* Provide daytime anaesthetic coverage for oncological surgery, radiotherapy and proton‑therapy procedures.
* Deliver on‑call support for the OCCU, including 24‑hour critical care cover as part of a 1:8 rota.
* Participate in the 8‑week recurring rota and ensure timely completion of scheduled duties.
* Collaborate with local managers, professional colleagues and other consultants to maintain efficient service delivery and share administrative responsibilities.
* Adhere to the Trust’s policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions as set out in the Terms and Conditions of Service.
* Support professional development, including supervision of junior staff and completion of mandatory training modules.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports CPD requirements as per the GMC and Royal Colleges, providing time and financial support for required activities.

Job Planning

Job plans are agreed with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager, reviewed annually (May–September). The initial discussion takes place within the first six months of employment.

On‑call Commitments

On‑call duties for oncological critical care attract a 2.2‑PA allocation and a 5% on‑call supplement, with a separate theatre on‑call rota for emergency surgery.

Health and Wellbeing

The Trust offers a comprehensive wellbeing programme, including Employee Assistance, a library, spiritual care, Schwartz Rounds, and staff networks. New consultants also undergo a Leadership and Development programme and a period of supernumerary shadowing before solo work.

This advert closes on Friday 17 Apr 2026.
