Job Overview
We’re seeking a proactive Health and Safety Advisor to join our committed Wastewater team within our Health and Safety function at Southern Water! In this essential role, you’ll ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, lead investigations, and provide expert advice across Wastewater, helping to shape a safety culture within Southern Water’s Wastewater operations.
As a key member of our Health, Safety, and Wellbeing (HSW) team, you’ll monitor safety performance, conduct site inspections, and support operations with practical guidance to ensure we meet the highest safety standards. Whether offering technical advice on high-risk areas, such as, biogas, confined spaces, chemicals, excavations, service avoidance or leading incident investigations, your expertise will drive improvements in safety compliance and culture.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver and monitor performance against Safety, Health, and Wellbeing (HSW) strategy and objectives within the Wastewater area.
2. Provide expert health and safety advice to operational and maintenance teams, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, industry best practices, and Southern Water’s standards.
3. Lead site inspections, hazard management activities, and root cause investigations on operational sites.
4. Offer practical coaching and mentoring to managers and operational teams to enhance their ability to monitor and ensure compliance.
5. Provide technical advice in high-risk areas, including biogas, confined spaces, chemical storage, temporary works, excavations, service avoidance and other hazardous substances.
6. Lead incident investigations, reporting findings directly to the Head of HSW and HSSW Director and making recommendations for corrective actions.
7. Ensure compliance with Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.
8. Attend HAZOPs and progress meetings and conduct site audits during ongoing directly managed projects.
9. Liaise with the Security and Wellbeing teams to ensure alignment between safety and security practices on operational sites.
About You
What You’ll Bring:
10. Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation and industry best practices, with proven experience applying these principles to operational teams.
11. Experience in a health and safety advisory capacity, preferably within the utilities sector. Exposure to process safety is highly desirable.
12. NEBOSH Diploma (level 6) or equivalent qualification, and a minimum of CertIOSH status (CMIOSH highly desirable).
13. A full UK driving licence is required due to the multi-site nature of the role.
We’re seeking someone with excellent communication skills, particularly in interviewing and report writing, who can clearly convey safety information and recommendations to a wide range of stakeholders, including contractors, operational managers, and senior leadership. You’ll need the ability to coach and mentor employees, empowering them to take ownership of safety at all levels, while fostering a passion for safety within the wastewater operational teams.
With strong leadership skills, you’ll be capable of driving behavioural changes and ensuring compliance across multiple operational sites. You’ll also have the confidence to negotiate and stand firm on critical safety issues, even when faced with challenging deadlines or operational pressures.
Package
This role will be full time Monday to Friday with a hybrid approach to working between our sites in the West Sussex area and home (with some travel to our Head Offices in Falmer and Durrington (Worthing).
