We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Occupational Therapist to join our expert and friendly team of OTs, Driving Instructors, and Administration staff on a permanent basis. The Centre is accredited by Driving Mobility and funded principally by the Department for Transport, operating within the NHS framework.
Our specialist service primarily assesses the medical fitness to drive of individuals with various medical conditions. Developing a working knowledge of DVLA standards of medical fitness to drive is essential. We also assist passengers and their carers in finding suitable solutions to their needs.
You will work either in Derby or at one of our outreach services in Stoke and Newark. A valid driver’s license is required, as driving to these venues (approximately 3-4 times a month) is part of the role.
During assessments, you will observe assessment drives with the driving instructor and make recommendations regarding fitness to drive and, when appropriate, vehicle adaptations.
Requirements include a robust working knowledge of various medical conditions and experience in cognitive testing. You will observe in-car assessment drives and use your clinical skills to make informed recommendations.
Excellent communication, decision-making, report writing, interpersonal, flexibility, and prioritization skills are essential for managing your caseload while considering team and service needs. Compassion and empathy are vital, along with adherence to the trust's ethos and values.
Proficiency in computer systems, including electronic diaries, and the ability to write and proofread detailed reports are necessary.
Training will be provided to develop your skills, and active participation in your CPD is expected. All new assessment staff will complete an external training program run by Oxford Brookes University, which includes three residential study periods and assignments, with costs covered by the service.
