Lifecycle Engineer – SSNA – Submarines
Rolls‑Royce is seeking a Lifecycle Engineer to join the SSNA Chief Engineering team in Derby. This role is suited to a Nuclear Watchkeeper with experience of a Naval Reactor Plant.
Overview
The SSNA submarines are the Royal Navy’s largest and most advanced attack submarines, combining world‑leading sensors, design, and weaponry. The Naval Reactor Plant is the heart of the platform and Rolls‑Royce is the sole provider and Technical Authority. As part of the largest submarine and engineering programme in the country, this role focuses on improving submarine availability by influencing design to consider maintainability, supportability, operability, and reliability principles.
Responsibilities
* Develop the strategy and provide technical leadership for the Integrated Product Support programme of work for the SSNA Naval Reactor Plant.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify effective solutions and adopt the best-for-enterprise approach.
* Represent Rolls‑Royce at external meetings with the SSNA Support Integrator organisation (MoD, BAE Systems and Babcock).
* Consider and implement Learn‑by‑Experience (LfE) from in‑service programmes on the SSNA programme where appropriate.
* Identify opportunities to reduce the maintenance burden associated with the Naval Reactor Plant and deliver associated work packages.
* Ensure environmental, sustainability and disposal aspects of the Naval Reactor Plant are appropriately considered.
* Provide technical leadership and support to project teams to ensure successful and timely delivery of work packages and maintain required quality standards.
Qualifications
* Detailed knowledge of the Naval Reactor Plant is highly desirable.
* Ability to initiate strategies for solving complex problems and make accurate decisions and recommendations.
* Self‑starter capable of taking initiative and making risk‑based, informed judgments, while recognising when to seek escalation or specialist advice.
* Strong ability to work effectively across a range of tasks and collaboratively with stakeholders from multiple disciplines, both internally and externally.
* Strong planning and organising skills to manage short, medium and long‑term activities and deliverables.
* Engineering degree or equivalent.

Position requires Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats. Rolls‑Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if required. The role is open to UK nationals or, in approved MoD cases, Dual Nationals from a non‑ITAR country.
