Are you a passionate, motivated, enthusiastic and caring Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - School Nurse committed to providing a high-quality service to improve outcomes for children living in Coventry?

Applications from existing practitioners and students currently completing the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing course are invited.

We offer a comprehensive preceptorship programme for newly qualified staff alongside a robust New Starters programme to aid transition into the Trust and the team.

As a SCHPN school nurse you will require excellent communication skills and a broad knowledge of working in the community with children and their wider family.

In Coventry we create and promote a positive learning environment for staff, SCPHN students and pre‑registration students. Training opportunities, clinical and safeguarding supervision is available to all.

The School Nursing team delivers a service commissioned by Coventry City Council and provided by South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, which is ranked in the top 5 in the staff survey and rated outstanding by CQC.


Main duties of the job

As the named nurse for multiple schools and GP practices within a geographical area, you will prioritise, organise and delegate work within the team to ensure effective delivery of service and best use of resources.

You will lead the delivery of public health programmes, including the HAPI – The Lancaster Model (TLM) and Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.

Your special responsibilities may include care for a designated area such as young carers, depending on service needs.

When required, you will ensure children, young people, families and school communities are aware of the school nursing service and how to access it.


Job responsibilities

Key Result Areas: Oversee delivery of ASQ in reception and the Lancaster model in year 6, 9 and post-16.

Respond to TLM alerts within timescales; professionally judge and delegate care to the skill mix team, evaluating outcomes with feedback from the team.

Provide brief interventions to respond to identified needs and discharge appropriately.

Utilise profiling tools and local data sources to inform practice and development.

Develop networks with Education, Social Care and other statutory and voluntary agencies to meet national and local priorities.

Lead at least three preventive public health initiatives per year aligned with national or local messages.

Contribute to planning and management meetings in schools to ensure child health is addressed.

Collaborate with Health Visitor colleagues to support transition into primary school for identified children.

Identify and support children, young people and families requiring universal plus services via the Common Assessment Framework, acting as Lead Professional when appropriate.

Develop and review in‑school care plans for pupils with complex health needs, providing support and training for families and school staff.

Act on intelligence or surveillance from other sources, e.g., A&E forms, domestic abuse referrals, priority families, excluded children.

Initiate referrals to Child Services and participate in risk assessments, case conferences, review conferences and core group meetings under Solihull Safeguarding Children Board policy.

Provide fortnightly drop‑in sessions in senior schools, offering advice, support and referral as needed.

Promote the school health service to other agencies and professionals.

Deliver research‑based work adhering to standards and guidelines for School Nursing.

Submit accurate activity and outcome data to meet KPI targets set by the Trust and local authority.

Support children and families during school transitions, including primary to secondary, and secondary to further education/work.

Ensure confidentiality is upheld in line with Trust guidelines.

Attend statutory and mandatory Trust training, ensuring completion follows Essential Skills policy, including regular appraisal.

Participate in clinical supervision and contribute to team meetings to stay updated with Trust information.

KPIs are achieved, TLM alerts are responded to within agreed timescales, and leadership of obesity and underweight initiatives meets targets.

Undertake clinical audits, benchmarking, and maintain effective communication networks with families and professionals.

Develop negotiation and motivational interviewing skills for influencing health behaviours and navigating complex environments, including child protection.

Organise local induction and training for new staff and support the team leader in service delivery.

Lead weekly base meetings, delegate work, supervise, mentor and assess nursing students and post‑registration community experience students.

Support team members in developing and applying their knowledge and skills, conducting appraisals and facilitating staff development.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse
* Specialist Community Public Health Nurse degree in school nursing or in progress completing the SCPHN School Nursing course
* Leadership Course or experience of leading teams
* Mentoring & Assessing qualifications (e.g., 998, CPD 308, C&G 730)


Experience

* Demonstrated ability to lead, deliver and evaluate preventative services for the school-age population and their families
* Experience leading a skill mix team
* Understanding of key performance indicators and their influence on service delivery


Skills

* Strong knowledge of key performance indicators and their influence on service delivery
* Experience and confidence in safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults
* Support other team members to develop and apply their knowledge and skills
* Understanding of the public health role in school nursing
* Knowledge of equal opportunities
* Willingness to engage in further reading to enhance practice
* IT skills, e.g., Microsoft Office / Word


Personal Qualities

* Excellent communicator, able to support the team through change


Other job requirements

* Full driving licence and access to a vehicle for community role
* Willingness to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check
* Legally entitled to work in this country
* Availability to work between 8 am – 6 pm and weekends if required
