Scrub Practitioner – Fixed Term
Location: Newmedica Bristol Aztec, 720 Aztec West, Almondsbury, Bristol BS32 4UD. Contract: Fixed term until the end of March 2026 (7 months approx.). Working pattern: Full-time or part-time; weekend rota required.
Job responsibilities
* Set up the theatre and prepare the environment for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery, including high-volume cataract procedures.
* Provide competent scrub support throughout the daily theatre list, assist the surgeon, anticipate and resolve potential issues, and maintain patient safety, clinical compliance and hygiene standards.
* Undertake medicine management and audit duties, maintain accurate patient records, manage clinical waste, and ensure correct disposal procedures.
* Support patients by communicating empathetically and helping them feel comfortable during their time in surgery.
What skills and experience do I need?
* Fully qualified Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with current registration.
* Ophthalmic theatre experience is preferred; if not, extensive theatre scrub experience with a willingness to learn ophthalmic procedures.
* Ability to set up for vitrectomy surgery, understanding Phaco Instrumentation, and working knowledge of Biometry/Lens bank/Implants.
* Excellent teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to support surgeons during theatre activity.
* Desire for continuous professional development and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume theatre environment.
Desirable qualifications and experience
* Previous hospital eye service or private eye clinic experience.
* Knowledge of current developments in Optometry and clinical practice.
* Competent user of computer systems and proficient English communication skills.

* Salary: £40,500 – £44,100 depending on experience.
