The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the overall clinical and operational day to day delivery, of clinical standards of care and the leadership and management of the Orthopaedic Outpatients, Fracture Clinics & Plaster Room workforce.

The post holder will work across both RBH & BGH ELHT sites ensuring systems are in place to ensure staff are supported and supervised appropriately.

You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment to ensure the delivery of safe, personal and effective care with excellent outcomes and positive experiences for all service users and their significant others.

The successful applicant with support the Matron, Directorate manager and Clinical teams to deliver on key performance indicators for waiting times, supporting new ways of working and delivery of outpatient services.

You will be required to make informed decisions within the scope of professional practice, involving staff, patients and the public to ensure agreed standards are met.

The successful candidate will work to agreed objectives and act on own initiatives, working within broad professional policies, with responsibility for policy and service development of urology outpatients across all ELHT sites.

Provide assurance to the Matron of adherence to agreed standards and policies.


Main duties of the job

Ensure a robust professional approach to service development and improvement. Ensures that any subsequent changes to structures and roles are underpinned by appropriate support and on-going professional development.

Develop and maintain communication with multidisciplinary teams on complex matters, contribute to improving quality and ensure the delivery of high quality of care, promote equality and value diversity.

Test and review new concepts, models, and methods of practice for new products and equipment, working closely with company representatives.

Work clinically in the outpatient clinic as required, ensuring clinical practice is kept updated.

Organises and deploys staff according to competence, and service need.

Works closely with the directorate manager, Matron & Clinical Director in demand and capacity planning. This will involve long term planning in addition to planning capacity to meet the short-term requirements of the service.

Support the directorate manager / deputy in developing the business planning requirements of the outpatient service.

Support and challenge team members as appropriate.

Addresses complaints by patients, members of the public and staff in accordance with Trust values.

Ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors.


Job responsibilities


Communication and Leadership

Provides and receives complex sensitive or contentious information and anticipates barriers to communication, whilst recognising factors that may influence the situation and pro-actively seeking out solutions to improve communication.

Communicate effectively with a wide range of the multidisciplinary team and stakeholders, including reps and outside agencies.

Communicate with patients relatives in a manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture and background and preferred ways of understanding.

To be empathetic and reassuring when communicating sensitive information and advice to patients, carers and relatives or employees.

To ensure that essential information on the patients condition and progress is recorded by self and team members appropriately according to NMC guidelines.

Provide leadership to support, and give guidance to ensure the highest standards of care.

Inspire others and encourage them to seek advice and solutions to problems.

Encourage others to take an active part in developing knowledge, ideas, and work practice.

Identify and manage challenging behaviours, within teams.

Implementing and evaluating leadership development and supporting and enabling staff in their leadership roles in clinical practice.

Support the activities of the senior management team in delivery of National Performance Targets NHS Improvement Plan.

Ensure working hours of staff are managed to maintain a health work/life balance and comply with the European Working Time Directive.

Have a flexible approach rostering and working times to support the services and work life balance.


Training and Development

You are responsible for the completion of all required mandatory training, You will ensure teams complete all required training.

Ensure you have up to date yearly appraisal, and 1-1 with your line manager to identify further training need and development.

Implement any training specific to speciality need, for all outpatient staff.

Develop new ideas and working within the clinic areas.


Organisational Responsibilities

To continuously monitor and take effective action to address quality issues and promote quality.

To raise quality issues and related risks with relevant people, and follow this up, addressing poor performance as per Trust policy e.g., complaints, incidents, poor communication.

To inform and influence of Clinical Governance Issues, ensure risk register is kept up to date and managed.

Budget holder with responsibility for the authorising and controlling of financial resources which includes the management of equipment and contract agreements, monitoring and reviewing of all staffing budgets.

Manage staff sickness as per trust policy.

Manage poor performance as per trust policy.

Planning / organising of clinics and monitor activities as needed.

Be involved in developing and promoting the service.

Clinical Audit and support Clinical research projects.


Professional Responsibilities

Continuing responsibility for the management of the department over 7 days.

Ensures targets are delivered and if necessary implements measures to achieve them.

Is responsible for ensuring that the Department expenditure stays within the budgetary allowance. Identifies problem areas and acts accordingly.

Plans the employment/deployment of staff within the department and ensures that safe staffing levels are maintained.

Identifies training and development needs for staff through appraisal, and service need.

Ensures effective and efficient rostering, and management of annual leave.

Participates in the recruitment and selection of staff for own areas of responsibility.

Involved in all departmental activities and management decisions aimed at improving and developing the quality and cost effectiveness of the service.

Support the achievement of performance targets for waiting times.


Person Specification

* 1st Level NMC Registered Nurse
* Bachelors Degree or equivalent qualification
* Computer Literate
* Significant demonstrable experience in working at Band 6 leadership role.
* Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage workload
* Promotes and evidence of leading positive change
* Excellent communication skills and ability to constructively challenge
* Ability to work flexibility to meet the service requirements
* Ability to work over the 2 sites
* Leadership Qualification
* Experience of a clinic environment
* Orthopaedic Pathway experience
* Car driver for cross site working
* Evidence of comprehensive change management
* Coaching qualification
