The new Barts Heart Centre has brought together the services of some of the best cardiovascular experts in the country who will work together to create a single specialist centre for cardiovascular disease to cover all our local communities.

You will be joining us at an incredibly exciting time, as we realise a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve services for today’s patients and future generations and create a world class cardiovascular service. This post is for our Thoracic and Robotics Theatres.

We are looking to recruit skilled and experienced individuals who are looking for a new challenge. They will be providing clinical leadership support across the cardiac surgical programme delivered in a new 10 theatre complex with cardiac, thoracic, Robotic and thorocoabdominal aneurysm surgery, complex electrophysiology cases and the nationally recognised Heart Attack Centre which services North and East London. There is the opportunity to develop leadership skills, mentorship and development of junior staff members and look towards opportunities for further academic studies. There is the opportunity to develop your leadership skills, spend time mentoring junior staff and reinforcement of safe practice within a large theatre setting.

We offer a wide range of development opportunities including extensive mandatory training, Band 6 development programme, the opportunity for further academic studies and attendance at external conferences and courses.

Main duties of the job

Be a proficient practitioner in Cardiothoracic Theatres, the post holder acts as a professional role model and clinical teacher. He/she also provides effective mentorship and supervision, participating in the education and training of nursing and non-nursing staff.

To ensure safe, efficient timely individualised care is delivered in line with local and national targets.

Experience

Essential criteria

1. Experience at band 5 Thoracic theatre scrub experience.
2. Supervision on non-registered staff.
3. Pre-registration and post basic students.
4. Evidence and ability to mentor.
5. Ability to manage the clinical area efficiently and effectively.
6. Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relatives/carers and staff.

Skills

Essential criteria

7. Good inter personal skills with the ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods, both written and oral.
8. Ability to plan, allocate and supervise the work of the team.
9. Able to work in a fast changing challenging environment actively supporting and promoting planned change.
10. Good understanding of current NHS issues and requirement for efficiency and effectiveness whilst maintaining quality.
11. Evidence of competent clinical skills.
12. Able to encourage/instruct all staff to use resources effectively and efficiently.

Desirable criteria

13. Able to work within set time frames, with good prioritising skills in meeting deadlines.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

14. Registered nurse.
15. Recognised post graduate theatre course.
16. Mentorship Course or equivelant.
17. Evidence of Leadership course/training.

19. Leadership course /completed programme.
