The Haematology department at North West Anglia NHSFT have an exciting opportunity for a highly capable and enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our dedicated team in a modern department, providing a high-quality Haematology and Blood Transfusion service. This post will be a job share, allowing for flexible working arrangements and collaboration within our team.

Current experience in a UK NHS haematology and blood transfusion laboratory is essential for the Band 6 role and desirable for the Band 5 role.

Our busy UKAS and MHRA accredited department is fully computerised (Winpath) and utilises the Q-Pulse quality management system. Equipment includes Sysmex XN track, Beckman Navios and Aquious Flow Cytometers, IL TOPs coagulation analysers, BioRad Variant II and twin Ortho Visions.

There may be the opportunity for this role to become substantive at the end of the fixed term period.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate must have excellent communication and organisational skills, a proven track record in a busy NHS haematology laboratory or equivalent and be able to demonstrate a broad level of specialist knowledge and practical experience.

They will be expected to participate in all aspects of the service including Routine Haematology, Coagulation, Blood Transfusion and the Specialist Haematology section and where appropriate will assist in the development of trainee staff.

The department operates a 24/7 service. The successful candidate would be expected to fully participate in the departments 24/7 operating hours following suitable training and competency assessment. Participation in this rota will attract antisocial payment enhancements and additional hours, further details can be given on request.

Job responsibilities

We are an IBMS accredited training laboratory. The department regularly holds lunchtime seminarsgiven byinternal and external speakers and we have an experienced Training Lead in post to support training needs. You must be keen to develop your knowledge and skills but to also develop others.

* To work closely with the Haematology Operational Manager, Blood Transfusion manager and theConsultant Pathologists to deliver a quality driven, cost effective andcustomer focused Service, including Haematology & BloodTransfusion specialities.
* To practice as a State registered BMS and contribute to thescientific output of the Service, in a manner appropriate to theprofessional experience of the post holder.
* To take part in programmes to ensure that all staff areappropriately trained and developed.
* To assist in realignments of elements of service provision, in closeco-operation with the Consultant Pathologists, the DepartmentalManagement teams and the Haematology Services Manager.
* To perform test procedures, often of a complex nature, accuratelyrecording & reporting results

Person Specification


Education & Qualifications

* An accredited BSc honours degree in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
* Relevant IBMS Specialist Portfolio, IBMS Diploma of Specialist Practice, equivalent level professional qualification (e.g. CPSM/IBMS discipline specific log book, STP, BBTS Specialist Certificate, BISHI Diploma) or a relevant biomedical science related, postgraduate M-level academic qualification (e.g. MSc), or UK NARIC confirmed equivalent and have two years professional experience within the NHS in an appropriate area of biomedical science
* Evidence of ongoing CPD
* Member of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
* Evidence of training/qualification in other areas related to Laboratory work e.g. NEBOSH, Certificate of Expert Practice
* Good practical knowledge of health and safety issues including COSHH, fire regulations and risk assessments.
* Comprehensive specialist theory of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
* Knowledge/understanding of the Data Protection Act.
* Specialist level understanding of Quality Control and Basic Quality Management and audit Knowledge
* Knowledge of Winpath LIMS system


Skills & Abilities

* Competent in a broad range of specialist Haematology and Blood Transfusion practical techniques
* Competent in the interpretation and specialist technical validation of result for Haematology and Blood Transfusion
* Able to complete specialist technical problem solving e.g. equipment failure, quality control failure.
* Ability to work to, and develop, Standard Operating procedures and policies, with a good attention to detail.
* Good standards of written and verbal communication with the ability to influence and share complex information
* Ability to work efficiently to a high level of accuracy.
* Methodical, organised, and self-motivated.
* Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information.
* Able to work independently and as part of a team
* Ability to work under pressure and prioritise work to meet deadlines
* Competency and specialist problem solving in an automated environment


Experience

* Broad level of specialist experience in a Haematology/Transfusion laboratory
* Competence and problem solving at a specialist level in an automated environment
* Experience of out of hours duties
* Familiarity with ISO15189 systems and standards.
* Investigation of non-conformance through root cause analysis and corrective and preventative actions with awareness of risk management to patient and service
* Completion of high quality, specialist audits identifying nonconformances and supporting teams to develop remedial actions
* Experience within an IBMS registered NHS training laboratory
* Accustomed to a busy environment
* Awareness of current professional issues
