Job Overview

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant General Paediatrician with an interest in Neonates and neonatal developmental assessment to deliver a combined neonatal and general paediatric service and manage a clinical caseload both in‑ and out‑patient.

Job Responsibilities

* Deliver and manage a Level 2 Neonatal Unit (NNU) service on a 6‑week rolling rota.
* Supervise the teaching and training programme during the NNU week.
* Provide outpatient clinic care, SPA activity and specialty service during the remaining five weeks.
* Cover the Paediatric Assessment Unit and reach to Paediatrics ED on a weekly morning during the outpatient weeks.
* Commit to on‑call coverage 1 in 6 weekdays and 1 in 6 weekends.
* Conduct two clinics per week during clinic weeks.
* Maintain the highest standards of patient care and contribute to the development of paediatric services at the Trust.


Qualifications – Essential

* Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
* MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
* Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility for registration within six months of interview.
* UK‑trained holders of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award of CCT by interview date.
* Non‑UK‑trained holders of evidence of equivalence to UK CCT and on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) application.
* Current provider status for NLS, APLS/EPLS.
* Child Protection/Safeguarding training (minimum Level 3) up to date.


Qualifications – Desirable

* Experience and interest in neonatology.
* Experience and interest in neonatal/paediatric neurodevelopment.
* Training in neonatal/paediatric neurodevelopment.


Clinical Experience – Essential

* Equivalent to UK CCT in Paediatrics.
* Recent familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices.
* Experience managing children in acute wards (NICU and general), ambulatory and outpatient settings.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of acute paediatric problems, including safeguarding issues.
* Ability to manage complex clinical situations in the core areas of the post.


Clinical Experience – Desirable

* Experience working independently at Consultant level.
* Broad experience of working within the NHS.
* Experience performing neuro‑developmental assessments using standard tools.


Clinical Audit – Essential

* Experience running a quality improvement project.
* Understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and corporate risk.
* Evidence of service improvement projects and audits.
* Understanding of NHS audit processes.


Clinical Audit – Desirable

* Quality improvement project relating to neonatology or general paediatrics.
* Evidence of involvement in risk processes such as serious incident reviews and patient safety systems.


Teaching Experience – Essential

* Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching.
* Skill in formal and informal teaching for under‑/post‑graduate students and nursing/midwifery staff.
* Educational supervision accreditation.
* Experience supervising junior doctors at all grades.


Teaching Experience – Desirable

* Previous experience in trainee supervision.
* Higher teaching qualification.


Management and Administrative Experience – Essential

* Understanding of the NHS management structure.
* Evidence of risk management.
* Ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team.
* Understanding of NHS directives regarding consultant clinical practice, including clinical governance.
* Ability to prioritise administrative tasks and work cooperatively with clerical staff.


Management and Administrative Experience – Desirable

* Training/experience in NHS management.
* Experience managing and leading specialist units, directorates or working parties.


IT Skills – Essential

* Proficiency with Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
* Experience using patient information systems.


Research Experience – Essential

* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.


Research Experience – Desirable

* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Previous research experience.
* Presentations at national or international meetings.
