The Role
The University wishes to appoint a lecturer for a fixed term to teach Breton through the medium of Welsh. The successful candidate will be an individual with a sound grasp of written and spoken Breton and Welsh; be able to teach language at university level; and be able to work as part of a team as well as independently. Please note that this is a Teaching and Scholarship post, and the appointee will not be expected to contribute research output or to contribute formally to the Department’s research profile.
The Department's teaching portfolio in Welsh and Celtic Studies spans a broad historical and cultural range and the successful candidate will be joining a Department that emphasises learning embedded in first‑class research. The Department is part of the School of Languages and Literature and this position will therefore be a good opportunity for candidates who are eager to collaborate with academics across a variety of linguistic and literary fields to enrich their teaching and research profiles.
This is a fixed term appointment of 9 months, to commence on 21 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

What you’ll do
This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
* Plan, manage, and deliver excellent teaching using appropriate teaching materials and methods.
* Prepare, teach and co‑ordinate Welsh medium undergraduate modules within the Breton curriculum and undertake relevant duties namely: maintain the Blackboard presence of the relevant modules in accordance with University guidelines; report on students’ attendance and any other student related matters in accordance with University policies and practices.
* Assess students’ work in accordance with the University’s assessment and feedback policies, including online marking.
* Provide feedback via the Head of Department or others regarding the provision in relevant areas.
* Provide pastoral support to students on relevant degree schemes and modules.
* Support the Department’s marketing campaigns to promote its courses.
* Contribute to the general administration of the Department or School as assigned by the Head of Department.
* To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
1. A good Honours degree in a relevant subject.
2. Ability to teach Breton to beginners through the medium of Welsh at undergraduate level.
3. Ability to use IT for administrative and educational purposes.
4. A commitment to providing an excellent student experience, along with experience of using innovative techniques in the delivery of education.
5. Ability to offer pastoral support to students.
6. Good interpersonal skills.
7. Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, and to contribute to the Department’s work.
8. A keen interest in, and enthusiasm for, the subject.
9. Willingness to take responsibility for professional development.
10. Good organisational and time‑management skills.
11. Good written and oral skills in both Breton and Welsh.
12. Oral (spoken) and Written Breton Level B1
13. Oral and Written Welsh C1
Desirable
1. Appropriate teaching qualification.
2. Experience of teaching a language.
3. Experience of teaching in a HE environment
4. Knowledge of how Blackboard works.
