Newcastle University is a great place to work, with excellent benefits. We have a generous holiday package; plus the opportunity to buy more, great pension schemes and a number of health and wellbeing initiatives to support you.

Closing Date: 02 November 2025

The Role

An exciting opportunity to develop cutting-edge methods in medicinal chemistry applied to anti-cancer drug discovery within a thriving, multidisciplinary academic drug discovery group. You will work as a researcher in the medicinal chemistry team applying organic chemistry to the discovery of new cancer therapies.

The project will involve the application of DNA-encoded technology to the discovery and optimisation of lead compounds for novel cancer targets. This will involve the design and synthesis of DNA-encoded compounds, selection against target proteins and resynthesis of active compounds off-DNA.

The project is part of the Cancer Research UK Newcastle Drug Discovery Programme and as a partnership with Cancer Research Horizons and Astex Pharmaceuticals. It is ideally suited to candidates with a background in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or chemical biology, especially with those with an ambition to pursue a future career in drug discovery.

This post is fixed term until 25 October 2027 with the possibility of extension.

For informal enquiries contact: Prof. Mike Waring at mike.waring@ncl.ac.uk.
