Professional Duties of a Teacher

* Exercise of general professional duties
* Exercise of particular duties
o If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of its principal.
o If employed by a board without assignment to a single school, under the direction of the board and the principal of any school where required.
* Planning
o 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
o 1.2 Teaching according to the educational needs of pupils, including setting and marking of work;
o 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
* General
o 2.1 Promoting pupil progress and well‑being;
o 2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters;
o 2.3 Making records of personal and social needs of pupils;
o 2.4 Communicating and consulting with parents;
o 2.5 Communicating and co‑operating with approved external persons or bodies;
o 2.6 Participating in meetings.
* Assessment / Reporting
o Contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references.
* Staff Development / Professional Development
o 4.1 Participating in staff development schemes;
o 4.2 Reviewing teaching methods and programmes;
o 4.3 Advising and cooperating with the principal and other teachers on curriculum development.
* Discipline / Health and Safety
o 5.1 Maintaining order, discipline and ensuring health and safety of pupils.
o 5.2 Participating in curriculum and administrative meetings.
* Public Examinations
o Participating in preparation and assessment of pupils for public examinations.
* Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
o 7.1 Contributing to the selection, induction and development of other teachers.
o 7.2 Managing other teachers and supervising support staff.


Working Hours and Schedule

A full‑time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, not more than 190 of which involve classroom teaching. Teachers may work up to 1,265 hours per year outside of classroom duties, with a maximum teaching load of 25 hours per week in primary or 23.5 hours per week in secondary schools. A minimum break of 30 minutes is required between 12.00 and 14.00 hours (and 12.00–14.30 for nursery schools).


Staff Cover

Teachers are required to cover absent teachers under specified circumstances and enrolment thresholds, but not for longer than two consecutive days without prior notice.

* Section 1 - Essential Criteria
o Qualifications / Professional Membership
+ Qualifications must be obtained at the date of taking up appointment.
+ Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
+ Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Home Economics to Key Stage 4.
o Experience
+ Demonstrable experience of teaching Home Economics at Key Stage 3 & 4 (or equivalent) to achieve positive learning outcomes.
+ Experience gained during initial teacher training will be deemed acceptable.
+ Demonstrable experience of using a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
o Other
+ Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
+ Pre‑employment Check compliance.
* Section 2 - Essential Criteria
o Knowledge
+ Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
+ Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
+ Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
+ Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
+ Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
+ Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
o Skills / Abilities
+ Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils.
+ Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
+ Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
+ Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
o Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos
+ Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the school’s values/ethos.

o Qualifications And Experience
+ Demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom approaches to provide support and challenge children and young people with Special Educational Needs.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people as “regulated activity”. If recommended for a post that involves regulated activity, the Education Authority will undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. Please note that you will be expected to bear the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate, details of which will be sent at the pre‑employment stage.
