Lead Project Manager – BESS
Location: Gibraltar
Contract: Fixed-Term Contract (Initial term through January 2027, with potential extension)
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
We are supporting a renewable energy developer and asset owner seeking an experienced Lead Project Manager to take ownership of a high-profile Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Gibraltar.
This is not a traditional greenfield construction role. The project has already reached commercial operation and is now entering a critical phase focused on project completion, remediation works, technical optimisation, and operational readiness. The successful candidate will act as the owner's on-site representative, managing contractors, coordinating stakeholders, and ensuring all outstanding technical and construction activities are delivered successfully.
The project is a strategically important energy asset supporting an island grid network and requires an individual with a strong technical background in BESS systems, capable of leading engineering discussions whilst managing project delivery.
Responsibilities
* Lead the completion of all outstanding project works, defects, punch-list items, and close-out activities.
* Act as the primary interface between the client, contractors, OEMs, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
* Oversee remaining civil, electrical, communications, and auxiliary system works.
* Manage technical optimisation activities across the BESS, EMS, PPC, SCADA, and associated control systems.
* Support operational performance validation and implement corrective actions where required.
* Coordinate procurement and delivery of outstanding materials and equipment.
* Manage project schedules, budgets, variations, and contractor performance.
* Ensure all HSE, QA/QC, and compliance requirements are maintained throughout project completion.
* Lead project reporting, stakeholder meetings, and client communications.
* Oversee preparation and completion of all as-built documentation and final handover deliverables.
* Support the transition from construction into long-term operations and maintenance.
About the Project
* 14MWh Battery Energy Storage System located in Gibraltar.
* Commercial operation achieved in 2026, with several outstanding work packages remaining.
* Direct engagement with government stakeholders.
* High-profile project supporting a standalone island power network.
* Remaining works include electrical completion activities, civil infrastructure, security systems, and enhanced fire safety measures.
* Significant focus on operational reliability, technical optimisation, and project close-out.
Requirements
* Proven experience delivering utility-scale BESS projects.
* Strong engineering background with project management experience.
* Excellent understanding of battery systems, PCS, EMS, PPC, SCADA, and grid integration.
* Experience managing EPC contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
* Strong electrical knowledge, including MV and LV infrastructure.
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.
* Experience working on operational assets and post-COD project activities is highly desirable.
* Strong stakeholder management and client-facing experience.
* Fluent English communication skills.
* Willingness to spend significant time on site in Gibraltar.
Desirable Experience
* Experience working on island grids or complex grid environments.
* Previous involvement in BESS commissioning, operations, or asset optimisation.
* Spanish language skills.
* Solar PV or hybrid renewable project experience.
* Experience managing high-profile projects with multiple stakeholders.
This opportunity would suit a technically strong BESS Project Manager, Engineering Manager, Commissioning Manager, or Operations-focused Project Manager looking to take ownership of a complex energy storage asset through its final delivery and optimisation phase.
