Main purpose of job:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is responsible for promoting UK trade and investment with the rest of the world. We are the department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the UK.
The overseas network is a vital asset in delivering the UK’s trade and investment ambitions. Embedded within British embassies and high commissions, our trade teams—led by HM Trade Commissioners—work in close coordination with diplomatic staff to promote UK exports, attract investment, and improve market access. Through commercial diplomacy, they build strategic relationships, provide expert market insight, and support UK businesses to navigate local conditions and seize opportunities. This integrated approach ensures our efforts align with broader UK priorities, including sectoral growth, supply chain resilience, and clean energy transition.
The DBT team across Latin America and the Caribbean (LATAC) is led by Amy Barklam, The HM Trade Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean, and her team is responsible for:
1. growing the overall trade and investment relationship between the UK and LATAC markets
2. improving market access for British companies, including small and medium sized businesses (SMEs)
3. developing trade policy.
Information About the Role
The Export Campaign Officer role will be part of our regional exports and trade promotion team – which aims to connect UK businesses with high-value international opportunities—helping UK exporters, and the economy, to grow.
The role will be based in Jamaica and will support the development and delivery of export-focused government- to government engagement and priority export campaigns across Jamaica and, where relevant, the wider LATAC region. These export campaigns will be centred around the growth priorities and trade opportunities outlined in the UK’s recently published and. Operating under the direction of our regional senior management, the EO will build a pipeline of high-value export opportunities aligned to our export campaigns, and work hand-in-hand with UK businesses in pursuit of these export opportunities.
This role involves developing commercial strategies that incorporate UK government levers (such as UK Export Finance). The successful candidate will need to work with senior internal and external stakeholders to implement these strategies, to ultimately support UK businesses secure high-value export opportunities across LATAC.
Roles and responsibilities:
Strategic Export Promotion & Campaign Delivery
4. Support the implementation of targeted export promotion strategies across Jamaica and LATAC, ensuring alignment with broader departmental priorities and UK Government trade objectives (as set out in the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy and Trade Strategy).
5. Monitor progress against strategic export goals, providing insights and recommendations to enhance campaign impact and market penetration.
Government‑to‑Government (G2G) Engagement & Programme Support
6. Support in‑country coordination and stakeholder engagement involving the Government of Jamaica, UK Government departments, and wider HMG partners and UK consortium on hurricane Melissa recovery
7. Support the development and promotion of the UK’s offer in areas of strategic significance, including the Hurricane Melissa recovery programme, by aligning UK capabilities with Jamaica’s reconstruction and resilience priorities.
8. Facilitate meetings, workshops, and negotiations to strengthen bilateral cooperation and unlock new commercial avenues for UK industry.
Major Commercial Project Development & Execution
9. Act as the in‑country lead for major commercial projects, advancing an established pipeline of opportunities and identifying pathways to contract award.
10. Working with senior colleagues to utilise tools such as UK Export Finance (UKEF) and other UK Government instruments to support project structuring, financing, and delivery.
11. Work closely with UK companies to position them competitively and ensure they understand market requirements, procurement processes, and opportunities.
Pipeline Development & Stakeholder Relationship Management
12. Build, manage, and maintain a robust pipeline of export opportunities across export campaign by fostering strong relationships with key public and private stakeholders in Jamaica and LATAC.
Market Research & Commercial Intelligence
13. Conduct in‑depth market research to maintain up‑to‑date intelligence on sector trends, growth opportunities, regulatory developments, and barriers to trade across Jamaica and LATAC.
Stakeholder Engagement & Promotion of UK Capabilities
14. Develop and maintain productive relationships with trade associations, chambers of commerce, sector specialists, and regional partners to amplify UK capabilities in priority sectors.
Market Access & Trade Policy Collaboratio
15. Collaborate closely with DBT trade policy colleagues to identify and address market access barriers affecting UK exporters.
16. Track progress on market access issues linked to G2G discussions and contribute to efforts that drive regulatory reform or open new commercial pathways.
Cross‑Embassy Collaboration
17. Contribute to cross‑mission initiatives, reporting, and strategic planning activities that align trade objectives with broader UK foreign policy goals.
