Job overview

The Clinical Lead will use leadership, knowledge and skill to promote excellence in children’s nursing care delivery on the Same Day Emergency Care Unit. This is an exciting time as we prepare for reconfiguration and the move of the unit into the Paediatric Emergency Department.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the other clinical managers to promote a culture of safety, learning from experience, and promote best practice.

The role will support nurses to realise their full potential as children’s nurses, always placing children and their families at the centre of care.

The post holder will work closely with the Matron, Lead Nurse, General Manager, and senior paediatric medical team to support children’s care delivery and be responsive to children, their families and staff needs.

The post holder will support the other clinical managers with the clinical and administrative aspects of the ward and ensure cost effective use of resources.


Main duties of the job

* Maintain a high profile in the clinical areas by working clinically and be accessible to children and their families.
* Support the nursing team in the development of assessment, implementation and evaluation of the needs of children and their families, whilst promoting the delivery of evidence-based care pathways for children and their families.
* Ensure the delivery of safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using persuasion and negotiation skills.
* Provide clinical advice within the Children’s Directorate, working closely with the senior Directorate and Divisional team to further develop responsive, effective high quality services.
* Manage and lead nursing practice on the SDEC, working closely with the senior Directorate and Divisional team and other clinical managers, and paediatricians to ensure protocols, guidelines, policies and procedures are accurate and adhered to and updated accordingly.
* Implement change to ensure high quality service delivery in line with the national agenda.
* Bring to the immediate attention of the senior team any issues which are impeding the provision of an efficient or high quality service adhering to the escalation policy and the Trusts Incident reporting as relevant.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Support the Directorate with preparation for internal and external review and audit.
* Receive information which may cause emotional distress to all parties and disseminate contentious, complex and sensitive information appropriately.
* Provide representation advice and guidance to the multidisciplinary team and regional network groups as appropriate, e.g. the Children’s Critical Care Networks.
* Promote flexible and integrated working, liaising closely with the Matron, Lead Nurse and/or ADN and the Clinical Managers in all areas of the service to promote collaborative working relationships which will improve children and their families.
* Link and liaise with the Safeguarding Team and other agencies on safeguarding issues to recognise and respond appropriately and effectively to concerns relating to children and young people.
* Ensure the provision of excellent infection control practices as defined by national recommendations and local policy and maintenance of high standards of cleanliness throughout. Provide a clean environment for care, ensuring best practice in infection control and improving clinical care standards.
* To link with the Trust Band 7s to address corporate issues within the Division as necessary.
* Work within the Nursing and Midwifery code of professional practice.
* Contribute to planning services to meet organisational and national targets particularly with regards to children’s care in acute children’s services and to promote positive experiences whilst in the acute care setting. Ensures that the ward team contribute to the achievement of Divisional, Directorate and Trust objectives and strategic planning, within the areas of responsibility.
* Provide and maintain an environment in which individuals can develop their skills and knowledge to their full potential. Ensure nurses maintain practice supervisor and practice assessor status. Provide excellent support for students on clinical placements.
* Work closely with the Matron, Lead Nurse and ADN to liaise with the PLFs and Senior Lecturers at the University to ensure that the service needs and educational requirements of students and learners are met.
* Respect children and their families’ diversity, taking into account equality and rights, ensuring that children and their families, including those who are subject to domestic abuse, are homeless, or have a language barrier, receive equitable care.
* Act as an innovative and enthusiastic role model, promoting an open, honest and transparent culture. Demonstrates excellent leadership skills.
* Ensure staff actively participate and support staff development, e.g. mentorship, preceptorship, mandatory training and appraisal.
* Maintain and promote an environment conducive to learning. Link with networks beyond the clinical area, sharing good practice and information.
* Active link with the patient experience agenda within Children’s Services and the Division.
* Promote the service and the service vision.
* Work with other clinical managers and Band 7s across the Division and wider Trust to promote excellent communication that results in seamless care provision across pathways of care, and implementation of policies and designated training.
* To take a lead for clinical incident reports, complaints, and monitoring of the risk registers, with support from LDN and the FSS Clinical Governance Team in order to ensure sound working practices.
* To identify protocols, guidelines, policies and procedures requiring development or review in a timely manner and that these are adhered to within children’s services.
* To ensure action plans for change are implemented and learning from incidents is disseminated robustly and embedded into practice. Identify areas for improvement and contribute to sustained CHKS accreditation.
* Collaborate with and support the team in the use of InPhase system. Ensure that incidents and complaints are closed within the expected timeframes.


Person specification


QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

* Registered Children’s Nurse-RN Child
* Degree in relevant subject or be willing to work towards this
* Extensive post registration experience in children’s services including experience at band 6 and evidence of continual learning
* Accredited management training course
* Teaching accreditation: ENB 998/SLIP/PGCE or equivalent
* Investigation training or willingness to undertake


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

* Ability to demonstrate experience in nursing practice caring for children
* Ability to coordinate the smooth running of the Children’s Acute Service leading elements of service provision and of supporting staff in the clinical environment
* Evidence of continuing professional development

* Demonstrable achievement in: Changing clinical practice Developing self and others Mentorship and ensuring others maintain current registration
* Significant experience of caring for children, young people and their families with a wide range of acute conditions
