Job Description

Originally named, Great British Nuclear, Great British Energy Nuclear is an arm’s length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play acrucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK’s energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy – Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future.

Great British Energy – Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory-based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy – Nuclear announced that Rolls-Royce SMR had been selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first

SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023.

Job Profile

The Associated Developments Lead will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and delivery of off-site supporting infrastructure critical to the successful deployment of the SMR Project. You will be part of the SMR Project Client Technical Team, reporting to the Head of Engineering.

You will form part of the establishment of a major programme. This will provide you with an opportunity to be part of a team that ensures successful delivery of a First of a Kind (FOAK) UK SMR Project. Whilst this is a fast-paced and exciting challenge, you will need to be comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and change.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Engineering to identify, plan and deliver the associated off-site development projects required for SMR development, including grid connections, transportation routes and infrastructure , Logistic hubs, Park and Ride facilities, workers accommodations, marine offloading facilities, offsite ecological mitigation, offsite emergency centre and utilities.
  • Work closely with engineering, construction, procurement, and regulatory teams to ensure timely and efficient delivery of all associated works.
  • Support in the development of the associated development plans that align with the overall SMR project and long-term objectives, ensuring timelines and budgets are met.
  • Oversee the integration of associated developments with the SMR project schedule, ensuring all dependencies and interfaces are well-managed.
  • Act as the lead contact for associated development activities, engaging with regulatory bodies, government agencies, local authorities, and utility providers to secure necessary approvals and agreements.
  • Foster relationships with key external stakeholders, including environmental bodies, transport authorities, and community groups, to ensure smooth project progression.
  • Ensure that all associated developments comply with relevant regulatory frameworks, including safety, environmental, planning, and construction standards.
  • Collaborate with the regulatory team to manage the planning, permitting, and consenting processes, ensuring timely submission and approval of all required permits, consents, and licenses.
  • Work with the Engineering Lead to implement a comprehensive assurance framework to monitor progress, compliance, and quality across all associated developments.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required

  • Proven experience in the delivery of complex infrastructure development, project management or construction for a high-value and complex project/programme.
  • Demonstratable experience of working within large-scale infrastructure projects, including planning, regulatory, and environmental requirements, especially those related to nuclear or energy sectors.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, with a focus on identifying and mitigating risks in complex systems.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and supportive environment, whilst developing team members’ skills and capabilities.
  • To have the capability to embrace change and uncertainty and welcome the emergent aspect of the job.
  • Ability to lead in a collaborative, multi-party environment at pace.
  • Experience working within a startup or similar innovative environment, showcasing adaptability and comfort with uncertainty.
  • Proven track record of leading by example, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and ethical behaviour.
  • Familiarity of UK nuclear regulations, safety standards, and licensing processes is ideal.
  • Experience of working on projects within a highly regulated environment and/or with safety critical assets is beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Infrastructure Planning, Project Management, or a related field. Project Management certification (e.g., PRINCE2, APM PMQ) is advantageous.
  • Valid UK driving licence (for site visits and stakeholder meetings).
