Sexual Health Clinical Support Worker – Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Closing date: 12 May 2026)
Overview
Assist in providing confidential, holistic sexual and contraceptive health care and education to clients in a welcoming, sensitive and non‑judgemental manner.
Main duties of the job
* Carry out tasks delegated by a registered nurse or nursing associate.
* Provide delegated clinical duties such as: physiological observation monitoring, point‑of‑care testing (pregnancy, urinalysis), venepuncture, microscopy, asymptomatic screening, obtaining swabs and specimens.
* Record keeping, including risk assessments and documentation of care delivered.
* Identify and report Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and safeguarding concerns.
* Provide basic sexual, contraceptive and HIV health promotion and advice.
* Undertake duties commensurate with competency and training only.
* Assess patient condition, comfort and report concerns to the registered nurse or nursing associate.
* Be aware of own role during medical emergencies and respond appropriately.
* Follow Trust policies, procedures and guidelines for all undertaken tasks.
* Participate in patient admission, orientation and support.
* Maintain a clean and tidy clinical environment, manage stock, follow infection prevention and control, dispose of waste appropriately.
* Support patients during procedures and post‑procedure care under direction of a registered nurse, nursing associate or doctor.
* Participate in audits and handover processes; report incidents, accidents or complaints.
Communication
* Welcome patients, carers and visitors to the clinical area and provide support and information.
* Answer the telephone politely and pass inquiries to the registered nurse or nursing associate when required.
* Communicate kind, compassionate and empathetic to staff and patients, demonstrating the Trust’s THRIVE values.
* Communicate effectively with other team members to ensure coordinated care and smooth handovers.
* Report incidents, accidents or complaints to the registered nurse or nursing associate.
* Use the Trust’s computer systems as required.

* Support the induction of new Clinical Support Workers by providing orientation and acting as an induction buddy.
* Sign off the national Care Certificate practice standards for new staff.
* Provide feedback to staff and receive feedback on own performance.
* Act as a role model, behaving in line with the Trust’s THRIVE values.
* Participate in audits under direction of a registered nurse or nursing associate.
* Ensure patient areas and equipment remain clean during and after patient stay.
* Shared responsibility for the maintenance of equipment and reporting defects promptly.
* Manage own time and multitask to deliver effective patient care; elevate tasks beyond capacity to the registered nurse or nursing associate.
Personal/Professional Development
* Maintain compliance with mandatory and statutory training topics.
* Identify a personal development plan during annual appraisal to support future career aspirations.
* Participate in training relevant to the clinical area.
* Complete all required competencies prior to undertaking tasks unsupervised.
* Understand personal limits of scope of practice and communicate these to the registered nurse or nursing associate.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* L3 Health and Social Care Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum 12 months)
* Completion of Healthcare Assistant Development programme
* Level 2 maths and English
Experience and skills
* Meet required clinical competences for area of service delivery and experience delivering delegated clinical duties under supervision of NA/RN (as outlined in section 2, paragraph 3 of the JD)
* Experience of working in multi‑professional teams
* Evidence of proficiency for clinical skills expected for Band 2 Healthcare Assistants
* Experience of working under pressure and dealing with competing demands
* Experience of communicating with people from different backgrounds
* Previous experience in a healthcare role at Band 2 or experience of working in a sexual health clinic
* Demonstrable experience in dealing with patients who are sick and distressed
Knowledge
* Knowledge of care and related procedures, clinical observations, limited clinical duties and relevant legislation
* Knowledge of hospital policies, guidelines and procedures

Additional information
All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering the first 6 months in post. Travel between hospital sites may be required.
