The Center for Coastal Resources Management has a general mission to support informed decision-making on resource management issues at all levels of government, including private and corporate citizens. Position Summary
The Assistant Research Scientist leads in the development, conduct and reporting of research related to the Center mission. The Assistant Research Scientist also leads the provision of technical advice and training on multiple issues to diverse audiences. The position serves as lead and point of contact for Center advisory services to the legislature and state agencies on coastal resources issues. The Assistant Research Scientist participates in the strategic planning and management of the Center and Center projects and assumes responsibility for directing project teams and managing project budgets as needed.
Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):
* Participates in developing, conducting and reporting on research projects on coastal resources, including both human and natural systems working independently and/or collaboratively as needed.
* Develops and delivers technical analyses of research, management, and policy information regarding coastal resources to inform decision-making by diverse audiences.
* Develops and delivers training to government agency personnel, special interest groups, and the general public on accessing, understanding, and using available scientific and technical information.
* Assists in leading projects, including managing budgets, as needed by Center work plans.
* Seeks opportunities for funding to support extension efforts and develop and submit proposals for appropriate RFPs.
Conditions of Employment
* This position may be required to work additional hours beyond the typical work week in order to meet the business needs of the Center.
* This position will require local and regional travel.

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION :
* Ph.D. in Marine Science or closely related field or an equivalent combination of master’s degree and experience.
COMPETENCIES :
* Strong working knowledge of coastal ecosystems.
* Demonstrated skills in environmental regulation and policy analysis, with the ability to effectively serve on advisory committees.
* Extensive knowledge of state and national marine resource policies, regulations and legal frameworks
* Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to perform data analysis.
* Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external audiences.
* Strong presentation skills with the ability to present technical information to non-technical audiences in both written and oral formats.
EXPERIENCE :
* Significant experience conducting research and advisory work on coastal ecosystems.
* Demonstrated experience in data analysis and reporting.
* Experience delivering presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION :
* Ph.D. in Marine Science or closely related field with experience working at the Ph.D. level.
COMPETENCIES :
* Strong working knowledge of Virginia marine ecosystems and coastal resilience practices including nature-based coastal protection strategies.
* Advanced skills in environmental regulation and policy analysis.
* Demonstrated skills in effective communication of technical information to multiple types of audiences.
* Experience in team collaborative efforts as leader and contributor. Demonstrated multisector/ agency/ jurisdiction collaborations.
EXPERIENCE :
* Extensive experience conducting research and advisory work on coastal ecosystems.
* Significant experience in Program Management.
