Overview
Summary: This full-time Maintenance Mechanic - Painter/Plasterer/Carpenter position is within the Facility Maintenance Service (FMS) at the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System, located in Leeds, MA. Work distribution is approximately 40% painting, 30% plastering/wall repair, and 30% carpentry.
Responsibilities
* Carpentry — set up and operate the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery.
* Carpentry — install/sharpen saw blades, lubricate portable and stationary table saws.
* Painter — assemble spray painter parts, install/remove spray guns, lubricate airless spray paint machines.
* Painter — understand the importance of the new Safety Data Sheet (SDS) under the Global Harmonization System (GHS) and how it pertains to workers and building occupants.
* Plasterers — receive assignments, review work to be completed, interpret sketches, and determine the best methods to complete the job.
* Carpentry — lay out work, determine material and equipment needs, and accomplish a wide range of work sequences from basic repairs to complex project segments.
* Apply coating materials by accepted industry techniques; read and apply directions related to mixtures, use, and application of coatings, paints, solvents, and pre-coating agents.
* Use knowledge of wood, metal, and wood substitute materials; determine proper grade, size, and type of lumber or substitute material.
* Mix plastering materials; install or replace metal, wood, or gypsum lath; apply tape to joints and finish joint compound for an even surface.
* Carpentry — lay out footings for foundations and construct concrete forms and related structures as needed.
* Use all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to perform work safely and in compliance with OSHA and VA requirements.
* Plastering — apply plaster on backgrounds such as metal, wood, gypsum wallboard, lath, and masonry; repair and patch plaster and stucco surfaces.
* Painting — apply materials to match texture, thickness, and level requirements; tint, tone, and blend coating materials; combine catalysts and drying agents as needed.
* Plastering — apply gypsum and plaster coats to a Level 5 finish.
* Carpentry — construct, install, repair wood and metal structures and items requiring close tolerances and structural soundness.
* Skilled use of common plastering tools (trowels, floats) to achieve a smooth finish, and brushes, sponges, and other tools to achieve proper texture.
* Operate tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, gauges, and tinting machines.
* Apply knowledge of safe Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures when maintaining, repairing, or setting up equipment.
* Able to layout ceiling grids for ceiling tiles with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements
* Painting requires preparing and coating surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and platforms, with surfaces potentially in cramped or hard-to-reach places, and may require working above shoulder height up to 75% of the time.
* Frequently lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment weighing up to 10 pounds; occasionally handle materials up to 40 pounds or more.
* Plastering requires heavy lifting up to 100 pounds while handling mortar, scaffolds, ladders, and other materials.
* Carpentry may require standing for extended periods and operating machines (bench planers, saws, drill presses).
* Work at job sites may involve handling heavy and bulky materials (e.g., plywood, framing members); requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring positions.

Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties of this position. Evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities must be supported by your resume. Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Screen-out element: Qualifications will be evaluated against the minimum qualification requirements. Those who meet the minimal requirements are considered for further rating; those who do not are ineligible. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited proportionally. Applicants should clearly describe duties and hours for part-time experience.
