Overview
Senior Field Archaeologist (Grade I) (Fixed Term) role at Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy. The Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU), part of the Department of Archaeology, is recruiting Senior Field Archaeologists (Grade I) for a range of archaeological excavations, evaluations and surveys throughout East Anglia. Confirmed sites include prehistoric landscapes, Iron Age and Roman settlements and various urban sites. The CAU has several sites scheduled for Summer 2025 – Spring 2026, including evaluations and large-scale open area excavations. We are looking to recruit archaeologists on 12-month fixed term contracts.
Responsibilities
* Deliver fieldwork services to a professional standard and to strict deadlines.
* Assist in the execution of archaeological excavations, evaluations and surveys as part of CAU field projects.
* Work with and liaise professionally with CAU colleagues, external contacts and, occasionally, the public.
* Follow specifications laid out in archaeological briefs, adhere to CIfA best practice and H&S legislation, and respond to client deadlines.
* Assist colleagues and the site director with morning pre-departure logistics, on-site logistics, and site lock-up.
Qualifications and requirements
* Essential: degree in Archaeology. A related subject degree will be considered if the candidate has sufficient practical on-site excavation experience (as determined by the University).
* Proven and demonstrable experience of working in British developer-funded archaeology and/or significant research experience including practical fieldwork.
* Able to work with CAU colleagues, external contacts and the public in a professional manner.
* Fast learner with a high degree of precision and accuracy; capable of problem solving independently.
* Ability to assist colleagues and the site director in following briefs and maintaining safety, quality and client satisfaction.
* Ability to assist with morning pre-departure logistics, on-site logistics, and site access arrangements.
Desirable: the following are preferred but not mandatory, depending on project needs: clean UK/EU Driving Licence, Membership of CIfA, First Aid at Work qualification; other relevant H&S qualifications (e.g., manual handling, Banksman, pipe & cable detection, Lantra Off-Road Vehicle Operating 4x4).
Terms and conditions
* Role is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months; ideally in post by 30 September 2025.
* Funding for these posts is available for 12 months in the first instance.
