The Role
As Project Manager, you will oversee a portfolio of highways maintenance and improvement schemes from planning through to completion. Working within the Operational Delivery Team, you’ll ensure all works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with contract requirements—while leading your teams to achieve strong performance, excellent service quality, and collaborative working across all stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities

Lead the delivery of highways maintenance and improvement schemes, ensuring all works meet required standards and client expectations.

Plan and allocate resources effectively to meet annual work programmes, collaborating closely with programming and permitting teams.
*
Promote and drive a strong safety culture across all activities.
*
Manage commercial performance, including forecasting, budgeting, and resource allocation.
*
Support continuous improvement across processes, behaviours, and operational performance.
*
Ensure fleet, plant and transport compliance is maintained.
*
Monitor and maintain KPIs, fostering strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
*
Provide effective people management including recruitment, performance reviews, development, and HR processes.
*
Manage and support supply chain partners to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery.
*
Support winter maintenance and undertake additional operational duties as required.
About You
*
Proven experience in highways maintenance or a similar civil engineering environment at a managerial level.
*
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, support and develop teams.
*
Confident communicator with strong report-writing and presentation skills.
*
Commercially astute with experience managing budgets and forecasting.
*
Highly organised, self-motivated and able to prioritise workloads for yourself and others.
*
Strong commitment to safety, quality and environmental standards.
*
Full UK driving licence essential.
*
SMSTS qualification required.
