As a Software Engineer within The Garage, youll be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining innovative cloud-based solutions and automations. Youll work in a collaborative team environment, producing high-quality, secure, and well-documented code using a test-driven approach aligned with architectural and engineering standards. You will develop, operate and maintain innovative, robust, secure, scalable and cost-effective solutions and automations to be proud of. As a Software Engineer you will utilise a blend of the latest techniques and technologies such as event-driven architecture, microservice architecture, serverless computing, containerisation, robotic process automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and optical character recognition. To support your work, youll have access to industry leading tools and platforms: Jirafor planning and tracking. SharePointfor documentation. Teams and Slackfor communication. GitLabfor code management and deployment. AWSfor cloud services. MacBook Prodevices for development. Direct Slack support from partners such as AWS, UiPath, and MongoDB. Your responsibilities will include: Independently resolve complex technical challenges and provide solutions. Support junior developers and apprentices by mentoring people to help with their professional development. Support with code reviews ensuring that quality and maintainable code is developed before being deployed to production. Produce comprehensive technical documentation Join in discussions on development strategies ensuring reusable code and libraries are used. Ensure alignment to DWP standards and best practice for all product development and support. Communicate technical progress and challenges within the development team. Work directly with Business Analysts and Testers to understand and implement requirements. Whilst not essential, having an understanding of how to create and maintain robotic process automations using tools like UiPath or Blue Prism would be beneficial when starting the role. Person specification Essential Criteria Experience of developing on cloud-based environments such as AWS or Azure. Experience of Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) practices and techniques. Experience of SQL and NoSQL database applications such as Postgres, MySQL and MongoDB. Experience of working within a Software engineering team, communicating with stakeholders, ensuring standards are adhered to and agreed ways of working are followed. This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. Salary Information Pay for this role is from 42,614 to 45,081. The maximum salary for the grade is 45,081, however a Digital Allowance of up to 13,266 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed. Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current salary. Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion will either move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or get a 10% increase to their current salary whichever would be the greater.
