Marine Water Quality Officer
Location: National (flexible/hybrid). The role is part of the Marine team within Operations Catchment Services.
Job Description
The Environment Agency is committed to building an inclusive workforce. We need a Marine Water Quality Officer to help make waters cleaner and thriving by 2050. You will support technical specialists in assessing the impact of discharges on water quality, modelling bathing water quality and nutrient loads in estuaries, and providing evidence‑based decisions.
Responsibilities
* Provide timely answers to technical questions for the Marine Water Quality team.
* Review complex reports and summarize key information for decision‑making.
* Interpret monitoring data and model outputs to support environmental protection.
* Summarize and communicate technical work and escalated challenges as needed.
* Build strong relationships across a dispersed team and with external partners.
* Use your initiative to contribute to the team’s work and wider organization.
* Take part in incident response duties, with full training and support provided.
Qualifications
* Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as environmental science, marine biology, or engineering.
* Experience in data analysis and familiarity with modelling software.
* Skillful use of tools such as Excel, Access, R, Power BI, GIS, and specialist packages like Mike or Cormix (advantage).
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical information to non‑technical audiences.
* Comfortable working in a virtual team and willing to travel for national meetings.
* Desirably, knowledge of water quality and marine environment, with a potential for professional membership.
Benefits & Working Conditions
The position is full‑time, with a mix of virtual and occasional in‑person meetings. Training and development opportunities will be provided. Flexible arrangements and additional payment may apply for incident response duties. The role has a 6‑month fixed term and a permanent slot.
