FPG has a great career opportunity for a Optical Support Engineer to join our client, one of the world’s leading networking companies. You'll be providing 1st and 2nd line support within the domain of Ethernet / SDH / DWDM / OTN including previous exposure to UNIX / SUN / Oracle systems.
Hybrid-working can be considered and the successful candidate must have previous experience in a 24x7 environment providing remote technical support within the area of optical / optix / OTN networking. It is essential that you have OTN / DWDM experience.

The mission:
* Provide system level post-sales support for our client, a global networking and software company’s customer base.
* This includes testing, troubleshooting, and remote technical assistance. It is crucial to have a solid understanding of the fiber optic switching and/or transport protocols.
* It is necessary to have intermediate knowledge of Ethernet / IP networks and tech such as SONET/SDH/DWDM, OTN, among other data transmission protocols.
* It would be advantageous to have prior UNIX and SUN/Oracle system experience. It would be advantageous to have knowledge of network management or element management systems.
* This opportunity involves daily interactions with the customer on all facets of network planning, deployment, technical network difficulties, and design may also be part of this role.
* An opportunity to grow – you will provide training / mentorship to recently hired Technical Support Engineers.
Responsibilities:
* When needed, offer 24x7 remote technical support (by phone or online) for specific our client’s products and devices. There will be a requirement for on-call work, which would would include weekends and evenings.
* As needed, offer customers on-site help.
* Share information about concerns and problems encountered in the field with Supply Chain and Design.
* Use lab research and debugging tools to help with the technical issue that the customer is having. Retrieve the data required to elevate the problem or incident to higher-level engineers. Engineering/design, product/project management, documentation, and training are some eventual areas of escalation.
* Collaborate to offer customer input with Quality Assurance, Design, Product Management, Technical Publications, and Training.
* Assumes the role of Customer Lead Engineer for particular clients
* Resident Engineering works remotely or on-site.
* Occasional travel to our client’s offices and customer sites globally (occasionally)
Experience:
* 4-year college or university bachelor's degree in a technical subject (such as engineering or computer science) with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience, or an equal mix of education and experience
* A basic understanding of how switching and/or fiber optic transmission equipment operate.
* It is necessary to have a basic understanding of the SONET/SDH/DWDM, OTN, and carrier Ethernet protocols in addition to a comprehensive grasp of other switching and transport principles.
* Capability to assess, troubleshoot, and solve issues;
* Working knowledge of transport and switching systems for telecommunications applications and Optical Networking
* Has worked with a variety of optical and protocol testing test equipment kinds.
* Hands-on experience debugging fiber optic transport and switching equipment at the system level.
* Experience managing an IP network, as well as mid-level proficiency in data communications, UNIX, SUN, and Oracle;
