General Operative (Grade 3) - Altrad (Connah's Quay)
Job Overview
The General Operative (Grade 3) supports the safe and efficient operation of the thermal power station by carrying out a wide range of manual and operational tasks. This role is crucial in maintaining plant cleanliness, assisting technical staff, monitoring plant areas, and helping to ensure strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Main Duties
* Transport, organise, and store materials, tools, and equipment safely throughout the station and in stores
* Manage stores inventory, issue materials, and complete stock checks as required
* Pull, lay out, and secure electrical cables as instructed, ensuring safety and accuracy
* Assist with cable installation projects under the supervision of technical staff
* Carry out cleaning and maintenance activities in operational and non-operational areas, including turbine halls, boiler rooms, and workshops
* Operate assigned machinery or plant equipment under supervision and according to training
* Assist with routine checks and inspections of plant areas, machinery, and safety equipment
* Manage waste and recycling streams, following all environmental and safety protocols
* Help isolate, tag, and secure equipment for maintenance or repair works, following instructions
* Support engineers and technicians with permit-to-work processes and basic support activities
* Assist trade workers, such as electricians, fitters, welders, or platers, by preparing materials, holding tools, or carrying out basic duties as instructed
* Perform fire watching duties during hot work activities and ensure immediate action is taken in case of fire risks
* Monitor confined spaces as a hole watcher, maintaining communication and safety protocols
* Report plant defects, leaks, spills, or unsafe conditions to supervisors immediately
* Follow all site-specific safety, fire, and emergency procedures
* Respond to plant operational needs in a responsible and timely manner
* Use communication systems, such as radios, as required
* Comply with schedule requirements, shift patterns, and attend mandatory training sessions
Required Qualifications
* Previous experience in a heavy industrial, process, or power generation environment preferred
* Experience in cable pulling, stores operations, fire watching, or hole watching within an industrial setting
* Experience working as a tradesperson's mate or assistant in an industrial environment
* Willingness to complete all site-specific and statutory safety training
* Ability to follow detailed instructions and procedures
* Good awareness of occupational health, safety, and environmental standards
* Physically fit and able to work in demanding industrial environments, including at height and in confined spaces
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Effective communication skills
* Flexible approach to shift work, including nights and weekends as required
* Reliable timekeeping and attendance
Desirable
* Valid ECITB CCNSG Safety Passport
* Certification in manual handling, working at height, confined space entry, or fire watching
* Basic knowledge of power station operations or plant equipment
* Experience using industrial cleaning equipment
* Previous experience supporting trades such as electricians, fitters, welders, or platers
* Experience with inventory control and stock management in stores
