Overview
As a Staff Nurse, you will play a vital role in delivering safe, structured, and therapeutic care for patients with complex mental health needs, often with forensic backgrounds.
Responsibilities
* Effectively manage the shift and participate in regular meetings to review and monitor patients' care plans.
* Provide nursing perspectives in MDT meetings, tribunals and CPA reviews.
* Assess, plan, and deliver high-quality nursing care tailored to patients' needs.
* Administer medication safely, monitor its effects and manage any side effects.
* De-escalate challenging behaviours and manage aggression using approved techniques (e.g. PMVA).
* Support patients in their recovery journey, focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation while ensuring confidentiality in line with GDPR and safeguarding policies.
* Conduct risk assessments and advocate for patients' rights while balancing risk management and public protection.
* Take on the role of Primary Nurse, reinforcing structured routines, maintaining therapeutic boundaries, and ensuring junior staff adhere to best practices.
* Complete incident reports and participate in post-incident debriefs to enhance learning and service development.
Working pattern: Flexible shifts including Long Days (07:00 – 19:30), Nights (19:00 – 07:30) and covering weekends and bank holidays as part of the rota.
Ward information: Oak Ward is a 15-bedded ward for male adults within the forensic pathway, including two medium secure male wards, one female medium secure ward, and a low secure male ward. The ward uses MDT approaches to support service users on their individual pathways and focuses on recovery, rehabilitation, and involvement in care and treatment.
Qualifications and requirements
* NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse, knowledge of MHA (1983/2007).
* Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (2005), including practical knowledge of FACE documentation, DOLS and Best Interest decisions.
* Child and Adult safeguarding procedures.
* Change management, organising and prioritising workloads.
* Demonstrate ability to enhance care through evidence-based knowledge.
* Demonstrate professional development relevant to the care group.
* Demonstrates ability to assess and manage clinical risk. You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
