Job Description

Do you want to make a lasting positive change to the environment? As a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you can.

Large slaughterhouses and animal‑by‑products installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. We’ve established a process for the definition of BAT within the UK, which uses transparent, collaborative, data‑driven principles that safeguard and build on the current high levels of environmental protection. The UK BAT Author will play a central role in this process.

Responsibilities:

* Draft BAT Conclusions.
* Liaise with Technical Working Groups.
* Present a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry.
* Conduct critical analysis of technical arguments and data.
* Write and manage technical documents.
* Manage projects and drive completion.

Experience & Skills Required

• Minimum 5 years working experience and a solid understanding of environmental regulation in the industrial sector.

• Demonstrated expert understanding of:

* The slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products industry.
* UK and EU industrial environmental legislation, in particular the IED and the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

• Skills:

* Collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
* Understanding the implications of BAT Conclusions in permits, on industry and the environment.
* Verbal and written communication.
* Building and maintaining relationships.
* Planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective results.
* Responding flexibly to challenges and adept at building consensus.
* Ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.

UK‑BAT is based on identifying techniques that can stop or minimise the production of pollutants to air, land and water, and ensure sustainable use of materials.

* Assesses the impact of regulated activities on the environment by interpreting data and drawing valid conclusions.
* Maintains environmental management standards and reports issues of non‑compliance.
* Establishes and initiates environmental monitoring programmes to meet requirements.


Additional Information

Length of contract: up to 2 years from appointment.
