Forensic Accounting is a specialised, exciting and growing area of accountancy.
A common misconception is that forensic accountants spend the majority of their time investigating fraud and/or working on large complex financial investigations. In reality the majority of the time will be spent working on expert witness reports involving personal injury, fatality and criminal injury claims and also the calculation of financial losses/quantum valuations in commercial litigation, professional negligence, and matrimonial cases.
The types of cases we are typically involved in are as follows:
* Personal injury, criminal and fatality claims
* Breach of contract
* Consequential loss
* Professional negligence
* Fraud
* Business and shareholder disputes
* Criminal, fraud and Proceeds of crime
* Matrimonial cases
* Employment tribunal cases
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will primarily assist in preparing expert witness reports (which include detailed calculations) for use in court proceedings in relation to a number of contentious matters. As an example our reports will typically include detailed calculations of an individual’s loss of earnings, loss of pension, cost of care, cost of aids and equipment and loss of services etc.
The successful candidate will perform the following tasks:
* Extracting and analysing data from financial records (including payroll records)
* Performing research into different careers/earnings and different business sectors
* Preparation of calculation of financial losses in Microsoft Excel
* Preparation of draft reports on Microsoft Word
* Various administration duties for the litigation department
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
A career in forensic accountancy requires meticulous attention to detail and excellent numeracy skills, combined with an investigative mind-set and accomplished report writing skills. The role involves an integration of accounting, auditing and investigative skill and the ability to present findings in a clear, concise and compelling manner.
