Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers an exciting opportunity for a senior pharmacist to join its hepatology service. The role supports specialist treatments for liver, gallbladder, pancreas and biliary tract, and is part of the national network for hepatitis C treatment and regional specialist liver disease, including transplantation and hepatocellular carcinoma.
The successful candidate will deliver specialist hepatology pharmacy services, provide care for in‑patients and out‑patients, and manage pharmaceutical care for viral hepatitis. Independent prescribing pharmacists are encouraged; the pharmacist will work closely with a multidisciplinary team, join ward rounds, and prescribe for in‑patients and at discharge.
Responsibilities
* Develop a specialist in‑patient clinical pharmacy service for hepatology.
* Provide day‑to‑day support for the prescribing of hepatitis C treatment and ensure compliance with national and NICE guidance.
* Work across the primary/secondary care interface within hepatology and viral hepatitis.
* Aid in implementing NICE guidance and horizon scanning for new medicines for hepatology.
* Develop evidence‑based treatment guidelines, often in conjunction with primary care and the District Prescribing Committee.
* Undertake clinical audit and teaching within the multidisciplinary team.
* Provide pharmaceutical input and leadership for the management of alcohol use disorders within UHS.
* Work with consultants, ward nurses, medicines‑management technicians and the wider Division B (Medicine & Elderly Care) pharmacy team.
Working hours & team
* Full‑time band 8a clinical pharmacist.
* 1 in 5 late nights until 7pm.
* 1 in 6 weekends (Saturday or Sunday).
* All staff contribute to extended hours, weekends and bank holidays as core hours, including dispensing and clinical pharmacy duties.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria:
* Masters degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience.
* Demonstrated Advanced Stage 1 competencies in the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework for medical or surgical patients.
* Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Teaching and tutoring experience.
* Experience supervising others.
* Experience implementing change and change management.
Desirable criteria:
* Management qualification or equivalent experience.
* MSc in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience.
* Demonstrated Advanced Stage 2 or Mastery competencies in the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework.
* Leadership qualification or experience.
* Project management training or qualification.
