We currently have the following positions available:

3 x 6 month fixed term, full-time positions with possible extension and/or permanency commencing ASAP.

Derby District High School (DHS) is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Derby is 220 kilometers east of Broome by road and is 2463 kilometers north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!

With the school motto 'Diligence, Courage and Strength', and the Stronger Smarter Philosophy that all students can succeed through high expectations relationships and high standards of academic and social achievement through participation and engagement in the school's inclusive, safe and stimulating learning environments. Many of the school's staff have been at the school for some time which creates stability for the school's programs and knowledge of the ongoing needs and interests of the students.

The Role

As a Special Needs Education Assistant, under teacher direction, you will assist in the education programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Education assistants will assist teachers in the delivery of planned education programs to assist students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social, emotional, and physical skills including the operation of computers and digital technologies. Within this role you should provide feedback when required on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals in special education

Successful applicants should have a high level of interpersonal skills and work collaboratively with staff members to meet the needs of students. Applicants will ideally possess the knowledge and experience of working with students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties and the ability to support student growth, both academically and socially, within the classroom setting.

2. obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start; and
3. consent to a and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.

8. Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
9. Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
10. Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
11. Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
