Band 8c General Manager - Oncology and Palliative Care

An exciting opportunity has arisen to apply for a role as the general manager for oncology and palliative care at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, working across our three acute hospitals - Royal Free Hospital, Barnet Hospital and North Middlesex University Hospital - as well as two chemotherapy day units at Chase Farm Hospital and Finchley Memorial Hospital.

The successful candidate will lead the directorate in ensuring the provision of high-quality patient services that are clinically safe, cost effective and meet the Trust's values. This role will be integral to embedding the new clinical operating model and building strong teams across the Trust.

The general manager will support developing a culture of high performance, ownership, and accountability where safety, quality and excellence in patient outcome and experience is consistently delivered, in line with national and locally agreed standards

The general manager is expected to act as a change agent and be highly visible to frontline staff, demonstrating strong personal leadership and direction whilst at the same time supporting the building of an effective leadership and management team within the directorate to ensure organisational sustainability.

The post-holder will deputise for the divisional director of operations when required and will contribute to the out of hours management on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the divisional director of operations, the postholder will provide operational leadership for the directorate's services, ensuring delivery within agreed budgets, activity levels, and standards of clinical quality. This senior role supports the divisional leadership triumvirate across all sites where directorate services operate, with a primary base at Royal Free Hospital.

The postholder holds delegated responsibility for operational management, implementing national and local strategies, and achieving service objectives within available resources. Working closely with senior clinical and non-clinical leaders, they will drive effective leadership, management, and capacity to support transformation and service delivery.

As part of the directorate triumvirate with the head of nursing and clinical director, the general manager will foster staff engagement in delivering divisional strategy. The role includes deputising for the divisional director of operations and providing cross-cover for other general managers within the division.
