Overview
The University of Edinburgh invites applications for the Research Software Engineer role within the College of Science and Engineering / School of Informatics / Centre for AI in Assistive Autonomy. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 30 September 2029 (35 hours per week).
Grade UE07: £41,064 - £48,822 per annum

Opportunity
The Centre for AI for Assistive Autonomy is a mission-driven research centre at the University of Edinburgh, dedicated to advancing interactive AI to enable new assistive technologies for mobility and healthcare.
Responsibilities
* Develop, deploy, and maintain software stacks related to the Centre’s research and commercialisation activities.
* Work closely with internal research teams and external partners as required.
* Contribute to all aspects of application-level software for robotic systems (e.g., autonomous vehicles and robotic manipulation platforms), including sensor processing, controller interfacing, perception, planning and control, human–machine interfacing, testing and data visualization.
* Take ownership of operational aspects of implementing and refactoring software stacks, including deployment in field experiments and maintenance.
* Collaborate with the research team on new feature development, data collection campaigns, and deployment of autonomous system features, including integration with novel sensors, edge computing, and human–machine interface technologies.
Qualifications and Skills
* Demonstrable hands-on experience with full stack autonomous robotic systems (Autoware), including design and execution of full system experiments.
* Track record of high-quality research publications in robotics and/or autonomous vehicle technologies.
* Experience in deploying software for robotics or vehicle operations in industrial or research environments.
* Experience managing one's own work, and possibly others, in a research laboratory environment.
* Software development experience with large systems (multiple modules), open-source libraries (ROS2), cloud computing, complex repository management, drivers and electronics integration.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
* Experience adhering to safe working practices in high-risk laboratory or similar settings.
* Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate clearly to non-specialist and senior audiences.
* Flexible, motivated to develop new technical knowledge and skills.
