<div><h3>Lead Environmental Engineer</h3><p>The role is part of the STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) national programme to deliver a prototype fusion energy plant. The Lead Environmental Engineer will report to the Head of Engineering Assurance and will provide specialist support to ensure the plant meets all environmental, regulatory and best‑practice requirements.</p><h3>Key Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>Develop the STEP Environment Case and coordinate with the Safety Case team to support regulatory and permitting submissions, including Development Consent Orders.</li><li>Act as the technical expert for the environmental discipline on STEP, defining the environmental and sustainability strategy and communicating it to senior leadership.</li><li>Define scoping and procurement strategy for outsourced specialist work, ensuring studies meet the required environmental standards.</li><li>Integrate environmental requirements into engineering design through Best Available Technique (BAT) workshops and ENVID execution.</li><li>Support the development of assessments and models for noise, air quality, watercourses and emissions.</li><li>Maintain plant‑wide waste and emissions inventories, both radiological and non‑radiological.</li><li>Validate outputs of environmental studies, assess external service providers and ensure continuous improvement of environmental performance.</li><li>Develop the environmental resource strategy, manage consultants and agency staff, and assess programme‑level environmental risks with mitigation plans.</li><li>Build stakeholder engagement and knowledge sharing, ensuring effective cooperation across programme areas.</li><li>Integrate environmental work with the UKAEA ISO–14001 environmental management system and train teams on legislation and best practice.</li><li>Lead by example, fostering a positive, inclusive and collaborative workplace aligned with UKFE values and the Seven Principles of Public Life.</li></ul><h3>Essential Qualifications</h3><ul><li>A degree (or equivalent) in an environmental or engineering discipline.</li><li>Proven extensive experience in environmental management on large, complex programmes.</li><li>Expert understanding of environmental and sustainability legislation and government standards.</li><li>Experience embedding BAT and ENVID into complex engineering projects.</li><li>Strong knowledge of ISO–14001 and experience with its certification process.</li><li>Solid project‑management skills and the ability to influence verbally and in written reports.</li><li>Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build working relationships with a wide range of roles.</li><li>IEMA or equivalent environmental management certification.</li></ul><h3>Desirable Qualifications</h3><ul><li>Track record of creative problem‑solving in ambiguous or innovative environments.</li><li>Experience with the full lifecycle of technically complex plant systems within major programmes.</li></ul><h3>Benefits & Working Conditions</h3><ul><li>West Burton, Nottinghamshire location.</li><li>Full‑time role.</li></ul><h3>EEO and Diversity Statement</h3><p>We welcome applications from under‑represented groups, particularly women in STEM and individuals from British black and ethnic minority backgrounds, and individuals with disabilities.
