Consultant in Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (WXUH, NUH & RLH) (8 PAs) Applications are invited for a replacement consultant post within the Department of Infection at Barts Health NHS Trust. This is a post based on rotation at Whipps Cross University (WXUH), Newham University (NUH) and the Royal London (RLH) hospitals. This post provides excellent opportunities to work in both a large academic tertiary care centre and busy acute general hospitals in the East End of London. This post is suitable for consultants with dual accreditation in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a growing department that comprises an integrated clinical team of Microbiologists, Virologists and Infectious diseases physicians, as well as having an on-site diagnostic laboratory. The laboratory is part of the new East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership that came into existence on 1st May 2021. It is an NHS pathology partnership between Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust pathology services, being hosted on site by Barts Health. The post holder will work as part of an integrated Department of Infection, joining 17 permanent and 8 locum/honorary consultant colleagues across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

1. Site specific duties – Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
• To support the current consultants in the provision of a timely, comprehensive, and efficient clinical and diagnostic infection service to WXUH, NUH and RLH
• To perform duties expected of a microbiology consultant with regards delivery and advice on urgent and important results
• To support microbiology ward rounds and MDTs
• Contribute to authorization of results, laboratory liaison, public health liaison and reactive microbiology service for the site
• To support delivery of OPAT and other outpatient activity
• Contribute to admission avoidance and early discharge through use of SDEC and OPAT
• Provision of infection control activity alongside infection control teams
• Provision of antimicrobial stewardship activity alongside pharmacy colleagues
• Contribute to development and updating of policies and guidance
• Provision of clinical supervision of specialty trainees

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work alongside colleagues to deliver an infection service for in and out-patients and the local communities and play an active role in the general workload of the department including overseeing the resident doctors.

The post holder will work as part of an integrated Department of Infection, joining 17 permanent and 8 locum/honorary consultant colleagues across the Trust. It is expected the appointee will participate fully in delivery of diagnostic, clinical, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control services to patients, staff and local general practitioners and deliver departmental teaching activity, including training of clinical scientists and specialist registrars in Medical Virology, Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The successful candidate will work alongside colleagues to deliver an infection service for in and out-patients and the local communities and play an active role in the general workload of the department including overseeing the resident doctors.

Applicants are expected to have FRCPath in Medical Microbiology, or show evidence of equivalent

Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology and Infectious diseases, or be within 6 months of CCT at the date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.

Applicants must hold Full and Specialist registration in both Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases with a license to practice without restrictions with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be within 6 months of full registration by the date of interview.

This posts workload roughly equates to a job plan of 6.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA

1. Registerable medical qualification (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent)

Higher Qualifications

Essential criteria

2. MRCP (UK) or show evidence of equivalent qualification
3. FRCPath (UK) (Medical Microbiology) or show evidence of equivalent qualification

Desirable criteria

4. Infection Control qualification
5. Other higher degree (e.g., MD or PhD
6. Other higher diploma (e.g.DTM&H)
7. MSc in Medical Microbiology

Registration

Essential criteria

8. Full and Specialist registration in Medical Microbiology (with license to practice) with the General Medical Council or be eligible for specialist registration within 6 months of interview
9. Full and Specialist registration in Medical Microbiology (with license to practice) with the General Medical Council or be eligible for specialist registration within 6 months of interview
10. Applicants that are must ALSO be a holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases or be within 6 months of CCT on the date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

Experience, knowledge and skills

Essential criteria

11. Broad experience in delivering a clinical and diagnostic Microbiology service
12. Broad experience in delivering an Infectious diseases service
13. Clinical experience and thorough knowledge of principles of Antimicrobial Stewardship
14. Experience of working in an OPAT service
15. Ability to organise and prioritise workload

Desirable criteria

16. Experience of working in Infection Prevention and Control
17. Experience of working in Paediatric Microbiology
18. Evidence of a special interest that complements those of other consultants
