In this supportive and empowering leadership role, the Deputy Head of Production will work closely with the Head of Production to nurture a safe, reliable, and high-performing environment for the production team. With a focus on collaboration and continuous improvement, you'll guide and mentor front-line managers, coordinate daily shift operations, and ensure that safety, comfort, and presentation standards are consistently met. You'll play a key role in fostering a culture of care and accountability, acting as a trusted second-in-command and a steady point of contact during the Head of Production's absence. Your ability to bring people together, set clear priorities, and champion team wellbeing will be essential in delivering the goals of the MMA and TSA contracts.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT
Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Management: Provide on-site leadership and first-line management for Production Managers, Fleet Duty Managers, and the Train Presentation Support Manager. This includes overseeing performance appraisals, managing attendance, supporting professional development, and addressing disciplinary matters as required.

Operational Coordination: Coordinate daily planning and task allocation to ensure efficient and effective shift operations. Ensure all team members are appropriately assigned and competent for their tasks in line with the competence management system, escalating concerns where necessary.

Training & Development: Support the onboarding and development of new team members through structured training, mentoring, and assessments. Promote a culture of continuous learning and skills enhancement across the team.

Performance & Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the production function in internal and external performance meetings, contributing to accurate delay attribution and operational reporting. Act as a key point of contact for operational matters with customers and internal stakeholders.

Shift Delivery & Compliance: Ensure the safe and timely delivery of train services, meeting standards for safety, reliability, presentation, and environmental compliance. Participate in the Management On Call roster to provide out-of-hours support during incidents or operational challenges.

Data & Systems Management: Maintain accurate records in electronic systems such as SRMS, ensuring timely data input, validation, and analysis. Oversee the completion of all maintenance documentation, both digital and paper based.

Materials & Asset Oversight: Support materials management by ensuring correct stock usage, cost code allocation, and efficient handling of warranty or repair returns. Conduct regular checks and audits on tools, equipment, and facilities to ensure operational readiness.

Safety, Quality & Risk Management: Promote a zero-harm culture by embedding safety-first practices and ensuring compliance with engineering, hygiene, and calibration standards. Lead or support inspections, safety tours, and risk assessments, and take proactive steps to address non-conformities or incidents.

Standards & Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the development and implementation of operational standards and procedures in line with legal, regulatory, and organisational requirements. Support quality management system reviews and approvals, including work instructions and risk assessments.

Project & Systems Leadership: Lead the introduction of TSA systems and processes, ensuring readiness for safe implementation. Drive TSA reliability growth planning to ensure new fleet readiness. Act as SRMS lead for site setup, rollout, and training.

Professional Conduct & Values: Demonstrate and promote values-based behaviour, setting a positive example and constructively addressing any behaviours that do not align with organisational standards.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE
Essential
•Relevant qualification or equivalent experience in a rail, depot, or operational management environment
•Formal education to at least NVQ Level 5 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area
•Professional registration with the Engineering Council at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level
•ILM Level 5 (or equivalent) in Leadership and Management
•Demonstrated experience in leading teams, planning operations, and engaging with a range of stakeholders
•Ability to make informed decisions under pressure and within tight timeframes
•Strong focus on quality and customer service
•Flexible, collaborative, and supportive approach with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
•Proven ability to lead through change and support others in adapting to evolving environments
•Strong understanding of contracts, reports, and investigations, and their impact on operational and customer outcomes
•Experience in managing complex discussions with internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership and technical teams
•Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of an organisation
•Understanding of legislation and standards related to health and safety for people and products
•Experience in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, and documenting safe systems of work
•Commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, and enhancing user experience
•Proficient in ICT, including Microsoft Office applications
•Willingness to undertake statutory roles such as First Aider and Fire Marshal/Warden
•Demonstrated competence in rolling stock maintenance standards
•Medically fit and able to comply with drugs and alcohol testing requirements (random and for-cause)
•Full UK driving licence
•Willingness to work temporarily at other company or customer locations as required

Desirable
•Extensive experience in an operational transport and production environment, with a strong understanding of rolling stock systems and maintenance
•In-depth knowledge and practical application of modern production methodologies, including Lean, Kaizen, and 6S principles
•Proven ability to lead and conduct complex root cause investigations within a transport or production setting
•Demonstrated experience in identifying, assessing, and mitigating a wide range of operational risks, with the ability to document and maintain comprehensive risk registers to support compliance and safe systems of work
•Formal education to at least NVQ Level 6 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area
•Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Engineering Council
