The role
As a Thermal Insulator, you’ll help ensure the continued availability and performance of critical defence assets that protect the nation. This is an exciting opportunity to begin or grow a career in defence, aerospace and engineering — a field where your work truly matters. You’ll play a vital role in supporting engineering teams, helping to maintain operational capability across submarines, surface craft and wider estate systems. This position offers the chance to develop specialist technical skills, gain hands‑on experience, and build a rewarding, long‑term career within a sector where precision, safety and purpose sit at the heart of everything we do.
Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:
1. Support engineering teams with insulating activities across a range of systems and structures.
2. Assist in identifying and rectifying defects, alterations and maintenance requirements.
3. Ensure all work is delivered safely, following health and safety legislation and Babcock policies.
4. Contribute ideas to improve processes and enhance productivity across the department.
5. Work collaboratively with team leaders, engineers and wider stakeholders to meet operational targets.
This is a full‑time, onsite role based at Clyde, Faslane, working 36 hours per week (07:00–16:45). Travel for training may be required.
Essential experience of the Thermal Insulator:
6. No previous experience required for this role.
7. A genuine interest in engineering or a desire to pursue a trade-based career.
8. A positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
9. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
10. Commitment to high safety standards.
Qualifications for the Thermal Insulator:
11. An interest in undertaking training or an apprenticeship leading to a recognised trade qualification.

This includes a structured programme requiring travel to Darlington every four weeks for a two-week block, with all associated costs covered by us. You’ll also need to be comfortable working in confined spaces and ready to take on a role that offers variety, challenge and continuous learning. In return, we’ll equip you with all the training, support and guidance you need to succeed.

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
