BAND 2 THEATRE SUPPORT ASSISTANT – THEATRES (EMERGENCY & OTHER DEPARTMENT)

An opportunity has arisen for a Theatre Support Assistant to join the Operating Theatres Department at Russells Hall Hospital.

The post holder will be an integral member of the theatre team working under the direct supervision of a registered practitioner and will be responsible for providing care to patients as delegated by the registered practitioner.

The successful applicant will contribute to the maintenance of theatre environment and quality initiatives to enhance patient care, and ensure that their practice adheres to policies, procedures and competencies.

GCSE grades A-D or Grade 4-9 in English and Mathematics or Functional Skills Level 1 are essential. A Care Certificate or ability to complete within 12 weeks of commencing employment is also an essential requirement. QFC/NVQ 2 Level 2 in Operating Theatre Practice or equivalent qualification/experience is desirable.

You will need to be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and communicate effectively with members of the team and patients. A commitment to undertake in-house training as appropriate is a requirement.


Main duties of the job

The Theatre Support Assistant will:

* Welcome and orientate patients, carers, relatives, and other visitors to theatre department always demonstrating care and compassion, including the collection and identification of patients.
* Assist with making the patient comfortable within the Anaesthetic room.
* Assist the registered practitioner with pre-operative patient preparation.
* Report any visible observed changes in the patient's physical or psychological needs to the registered practitioner.
* Provide support to the registered practitioner, and where appropriate, other members of the theatre clinical team as required.
* Communicate effectively and maintain good relationships with patients and other healthcare practitioners.
* Always ensure the maintenance of confidentiality and privacy and dignity of patients.
* Adhere to all infection prevention policies and procedures.

Person specification


Qualifications & Education

* Maths and English qualification - GCSE Grade A-D, or Grade 4-9, or Functional Skills Level 1
* QCF/NVQ Level 2 in Operating Theatre Practice or equivalent qualification/relevant experience


Communication & Relationship Skills

* Evidence of effective communications skills including verbal, written (legible handwriting), non‑verbal, compassion and respect
* Ability to communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and/or carers
* Ability to communicate effectively with staff/multidisciplinary team


Experience

* Able to assess patient's health, safety and wellbeing while undertaking care and referring/escalating to other staff as appropriate
* Regular contact with bodily fluids when carrying out interventions and/or treatments
* Frequent moderate/intense effort required for periods of time
* Regular/frequent manual handling of patient, equipment, stores
* Experience in a healthcare environment
* Manual handling of patients, equipment and stores


Knowledge & Training

* Ability to recognise limitations of knowledge and competence and practice within these boundaries
* Prepared to undergo further training
* Able to use and update IT systems with patient information
* An understanding of their role within the team


Planning & Organisational Skills

* Participation in flexible working patterns/shift working required to provide 24 hour service to meet the needs of the service


Visa and Right to Work

In line with UK Home Office rules, Band 2 clinical and non‑clinical roles, and Band 3 non‑clinical roles, are not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Non‑clinical roles at Agenda for Change Bands 7–9 that meet the required skill level (RQF 6) and salary threshold are eligible for sponsorship.

The Trust will also accept applications from candidates who can evidence their existing right to work in the UK or who hold an alternative eligible visa.
