Overview

Join to apply for the Trainee Contact Management Centre Officer: Oxford – Kidlington (999/101 Call Handler) role at Thames Valley Police.

Full time vacancies. As a Police Call Handler, you will help protect our communities by being the first voice they hear when they call for help and assistance.


Responsibilities

* Be the first point of contact for callers and provide essential assistance as a Police Call Handler.
* No previous experience required — full training and support will be provided to prepare you to take calls.
* Demonstrate a calm head under pressure, good communication, attention to detail, and the ability to use IT systems.
* Be ready for the unexpected, make key decisions while taking information from callers, and handle a range of calls from non-urgent 101 enquiries to distressing 999 emergencies. You may receive abuse from some callers, making this a demanding but rewarding role.
* Complete a structured apprenticeship programme with on- and off-the-job training, leading to a nationally recognised Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Service Contact Handling on successful completion.


Requirements/Qualifications

* Common sense, resilience, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure.
* Willingness to undertake a 5-week full-time course (likely at Kidlington) and attend mandatory awareness sessions as part of the recruitment process.
* All candidates must be prepared for vetting and medical clearances; the next intake is early 2026.
* Age 18 or over on starting; if you do not hold English and Math GCSEs (A-C / 9-4 or equivalent), Functional Skills will be offered.
* Structured apprenticeship programme with on- and off-the-job training.
