Specialist Occupational Therapist

We are a Teaching Trust at the forefront of delivering high quality, leading edge acute services. We are looking for innovative Occupational Therapists to join our Team. The post sits within the Children's Occupational Therapy Team working across both acute and community services, this post is a rotational post and covers clinical specialist areas including paediatric oncology, neurology and orthopaedics. You will be required to provide cover in one of our speciality areas where you will be able to utilise your core OT skills. There will be a requirement to supervise Band 5 Therapists, support staff and students.

The post holder will carry a designated caseload of patients who are the responsibility of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. A flexible approach is required as the department is currently undergoing a period of change. The post holder will be a highly motivated individual with good inter disciplinary team working skills. The post holder will be expected to independently manage a personal caseload within a defined area of the service or a particular client group, working without direct supervision.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have post-registration experience in physical health preferably including experience in paediatrics, strong personal management and communication skills and an interest in evaluating and developing practice. The Trust is committed to supporting staff through further training and competency development

Excellent knowledge of Occupational Therapy in the relevant area of practice.

Excellent communication & interpersonal skills. Organisation and time management skills and an ability to pass on skills/knowledge to others both formal and informal environments. Current full driving Licence

Confident, motivated, outgoing and enthusiastic individual. Able to work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team. Committed to personal and team development and able to maintain judgement under pressure.

Awareness of the Social model of disability

The role will also include some organisation of service provision and developing and implementing service improvements alongside senior colleagues in accordance with the Trust's objectives.

Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities are to undertake assessment and treatment of children attending Great North Children's Hospital as well as children living in Newcastle and attending mainstream schools.

Undertakes a highly specialised role in advanced assessment, planning and implementing equipment for children with a range of disabilities who may have complex and/or chronic presentations.

Is responsible for planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Occupational Therapy service within their own area. Maintains records and writes reports as an autonomous practitioner.

To work closely with parents, educational staff, social services, voluntary carers and other relevant professionals to co-ordinate and support the delivery of treatments and services to children.

To provide statutory reports for children with special education needs.


Person Specification


KNOWLEDGE

* In-depth clinical knowledge of medical conditions and their effect on occupational performance
* Highly developed understanding of OT process within acute setting
* In-depth knowledge of health and social care policy, risk assessment and management
* Extensive knowledge of a range of disability equipment
* Extensive knowledge of eligibility criteria and procedures/policies relevant to disability equipment, minor housing adaptations
* Highly specialist knowledge of moving and handling legislation and knowledge of current moving and handling best practice and associated equipment
* Excellent understanding of professional ethics and their application into practice
* Good knowledge of clinical governance
* Evidence of CPD
* Knowledge of undertaking research and audit projects
* Knowledge of team dynamics and team building


SKILLS

* Good organisation, time management, problem solving and prioritisation skills
* Supervisory, team management skills
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Commitment to personal and service development
* Effective written and oral communication skills
* Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance


EXPERIENCE

* Significant post-registration experience incl experience within physical health
* Use of functional assessment and activity analysis
* Experience of working with patients with physical disability eg reduced mobility
* Team management
* Experience in supervising staff


QUALIFICATION

* Degree/Diploma in OT
* State registered with Health Professions Council
* Member of BAOT
