Overview
North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic Specialist Doctor to deliver clinical microbiology services as part of the existing team. The post is based in the Infection Sciences Department at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, with rotation to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. The department includes Microbiology, Virology and Immunology laboratories, and the Immunology service is a national reference centre for bird breeder's lung and farmer's lung. The Infection Prevention and Control team works across trust sites in conjunction with senior clinical leadership.
Main duties / Responsibilities
* Deliver clinical microbiology services as part of a team that includes two Consultants, one Speciality Doctor, one Locally Employed Doctor and one rotational Foundation Year 2 Doctor. The appointee will function independently at a senior level, close to that of a Consultant.
* Participate in a one in four on-call rota as a Clinical Microbiologist. Contribute equally to out-of-hours work and on-call duties, with on-site availability on Saturdays and time off in lieu. Some on-call may be provided remotely, including Sundays, with remote access to the Trust's IT systems for results and report validation. Working from home can be arranged with agreement from the Clinical Director.
* Engage in service planning and development, with a plan shaped upon appointment and reviewed after three months and annually. Opportunities exist for portfolio roles including academic posts, leadership and medical education.
* Be involved in a trust-wide laboratory service centred at CIC, supporting the wider North Cumbria region, including interaction with the North East and North Cumbria Pathology Network.

Person specification
* Essential qualifications and experience
o MBBS or recognised equivalent
o GMC Registration with a license to practice
o Minimum of 12 years' medical work, including at least six years in Medical Microbiology
* Desirable qualifications and experience
o FRCPath or equivalent
o Teaching of junior medical staff and nursing staff
o Experience of OPAT services, CPD, GMC revalidation, NHS experience
* Management / Administrative Experience
o Willingness to provide clinical leadership for the service
o Familiar with clinical governance
o Ability to cover on-call service
* Academic Achievements / Research / Publications
o Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
o Understanding of Clinical Governance; academic publications desirable
* Personal Qualities
